COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"Every set was tight tonight. I thought we made too many errors at critical times; we had our chances but didn't convert. Lexi had a good all-around match attacking and defending. We'll regroup and look to bounce back against Long Beach State tomorrow night."
FIRST SET
The visitors got out to a quick start, using a 5-1 run to extend a 7-5 to 12-6 following a Barcelos kill. The Matadors pulled within five (12-7) following a CSUN timeout before the Titans pushed their lead to eight at 17-9 forcing a second CSUN timeout. The Fullerton lead swelled to as many as nine before the Matadors put together a late rally as a pair of Orshoff kills trimmed the deficit to 23-19. A final kill from Nevarez cut the lead to three before Fullerton scored the final two points in a 25-20 win.
SECOND SET
The lead would see-saw back and forth until the mid-point of the second set when the Titans used a mini 4-1 run to snap a 13-13 tie. A Fullerton hitting error pulled CSUN within two at 17-15 when the visitors engineered a 5-1 run to open up a 22-16 cushion. But an Anderson kill would fuel an ensuing 5-1 Matador run which resulted in a Titan timeout at 23-20. Fullerton was whistled for a setting error on the next point pulling the Matadors within two at 23-21 before an Ala'ilima-Daley kill set the Titans up with set point at 24-21. An Orshoff kill and a Nevarez solo stuff saved two set points before Julia Crawford's kill ended the set.
THIRD SET
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors used a 4-2 run - capped by an Orshoff kill - to snap a 10-10 tie. The Titans rallied out of timeout to draw even at 14-all. A Fullerton service kept CSUN in front (15-14) and the Matadors maintained a one-point lead at 18-17 when the visitors scored four straight to take a 21-18 lead. A Titan hitting error, followed by two straight Orshoff kills pulled CSUN even and with the score still tied at 22-22, the Matadors used a hitting error and a kill and solo block from Nevarez to cap a 25-22 win.
FOURTH SET
An early kill by Nevarez gave CSUN an early 4-2 lead before the Titans rolled off six straight points to open up an 8-4 lead. The Matadors rallied back to within two on four occasions, the last at 13-11, when Fullerton used a pair of blocks to extend the lead to 15-11. Still down four at 20-16, a solo block by Anderson propelled the Matadors on a 5-2 run the closed the gap to 22-21. Orshoff would score CSUN's final point of the night with a kill at 23-22 before a pair of Crawford kills sent the Titans to the 3-1 win.
