10/29/2021 9:27:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LA JOLLA, Calif. – In its first match in La Jolla since 1989, the CSUN Women's Volleyball team claimed the opening set before UC San Diego came back to win the final three sets to defeat the Matadors in four sets in a Big West Conference match Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 as the host Tritons improve to 8-14 overall and 5-6 in the Big West. The loss drops the Matadors to 4-17 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Lauryn Anderson and senior Nicole Nevarez each had 10 kills to lead CSUN with Anderson hitting .364 on 22 swings. Nevarez, who hit .235 on 34 attacks, completed her team-leading third double-double of the season by adding 12 digs.
• A trio of Matadors, Taylor Hunter, Lexi McLeod and Taylor Orshoff, each added seven kills as Hunter hit a team-high .375 with one hitting error on 16 swings. McLeod also added 12 digs and four blocks including one solo stuff while Hunter shared match-high honors with four blocks as well. Orshoff added three blocks (one solo), eight digs and one ace.
• Senior libero Makayla Bradford matched her career-high with 30 digs while setters Carisa Barron and Madison Klungel combined for 38 assists, 10 digs and two aces.
• Neither team hit particularly well as UCSD (.223) wound up with 61 kills as a team to 44 for the Matadors (.174), but CSUN committed seven fewer hitting errors. The Tritons posted an 84-74 advantage in digs but the Matadors held a slight edge in aces (7-6) and blocks (10.0-7.0).
• Ava McInnes led all hitters in the match with 18 kills (.173) to lead UC San Diego.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"We came out and played a great first set. We played well in the second set and battled back to take the lead late but little errors at the end cost us the set. We need to be better defensively."
SET STORY
The Matadors got off to a great start to the match, hitting .308 while limiting UCSD to a .109 clip. CSUN would use the advantage to take a 25-22 win in the opening set. Unfortunately, the Matadors could not replicate that hitting success as they hit .129 over the final three sets. Conversely, the Tritons hit nearly .270 over the final three sets to pull out a two-point (25-23) win in set two before taking the final two sets by five and seven-point margins.
