COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"I am proud of how the players competed tonight. This was a tough match with some close sets. We had our chances but just couldn't convert a couple of opportunities. Lexi had a great all-around match tonight."
FIRST SET
UCI took its first lead of the set at 10-9 on a block by Umeh and Onye Ofoegbu. Consecutive kills by Umeh and Ofeogbu preceded a Matador hitting error giving UCI a 13-10 advantage. CSUN trimmed the Anteater lead to 16-15 on a Seyvion Waggoner kill, but UCI would score the next three on back-to-back kills and a block to lead 19-15. The Anteaters were on the verge of locking up the opening set UCI (23-19), but CSUN responded on a 7-1 run to close out the set, 26-24.
SECOND SET
UCI jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before forcing a Matador timeout at 12-7. The Anteaters scored three more out of the timeout to open up a 15-7 cushion. Another kill by Umeh and a block by Ofeogbu extended the UCI lead to 19-13 and despite CSUN closing to within, 24-19, UCI took a 25-20 win.
THIRD SET
After the Anteaters opened up a two-point lead at 9-7, CSUN rallied behind a 4-2 run to knot the score at 11-11. UCI maintained a 17-15 lead when the Matadors rallied for three straight points to move back in front 18-17 following one of Makayla Bradford's three aces. Trailing 20-18, Umeh put away a pair of kills to knot the score then a block by Umeh and Ofoegbu gave UCI a 21-20 advantage. CSUN would score three of the next four to hold set point at 24-22 before the Anteaters would rally on a kill by Ofoegbu and two Matador errors to move back ahead 25-24. The teams would trade points until CSUN used a kill and an Anteater attack error to win the set, 30-28
FOURTH SET
A pair of aces gave the hosts an early 3-1 lead before UCI extended the lead to as many as eight at 10-2. The Matadors then answered with a 5-0 run to close to within 10-7 following a pair of Nevarez kills. The Anteaters would claim five of the next seven points to open up a 15-9 lead. The Matadors would pull within 22-21 when Taylor Orshoff and Lauryn Anderson stuffed a UCI attack. CSUN remained within one at 23-22 and 24-23 when Umeh's kill sent the Anteaters to the 25-23 win.
