Matadors Drop 3-1 Decision at UC San Diego
10/3/2021 6:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-11, 1-2 Big West) suffered a 3-1 defeat to UC San Diego on Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium. Sami Alarcon scored the first goal of the game but the Tritons answered with three-straight goals in the first half to take control of the contest. In net, Amanda Delgado recorded a save in the match.
UCSD led in the shot department 14-13 while CSUN had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. UCSD also posted a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. A total of 31 fouls were committed in the match with CSUN whistled for 19 of them.
FIRST HALF
CSUN came out as the aggressors with four shots recorded in the first 10-plus minutes. The Matadors moved the ball into the final third when Cindy Arteaga had her shot blocked leading to a corner kick in the 12th minute. CSUN would take advantage of the set piece opportunity as Christiane Sundstrom kicked the ball into the six-yard line to Alarcon who headed the ball into the net.
The Tritons responded with a pair of goals over a 95-second span to quickly take the lead. Following a free kick, a long ball into the box deflected off Alarcon but Kameryn Hoban quickly gained possession and kicked the ball past Delgado for the equalizer. Moments later, UCSD again capitalized on a long ball over the top through the middle of the field. This time, Caitlin McCarthy flicked the pass backwards and into the goal to give UCSD a 2-1 lead.
Lucy Tang nearly hit the goal in the 27th minute when she hit the crossbar but she would come through with the Tritons' third goal seven minutes later. On a drive up the left wing, Tang beat her defender and found the net on a shot from 15 yards. CSUN withstood four more shot attempts from the Tritons including an attempt from Lizzy Teran that was saved by Delgado.
SECOND HALF
CSUN would limit the scoring chances for the Tritons in the second half, holding UCSD to four attempts with none on goal. Delgado was not credited with a save in the second half but the Matador goalkeeper broke up several scoring chances with deflections.
On the offensive end, Sundstrom and Cora Willcot each had shots on goal in the period for CSUN but goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald made a pair of routine saves on each attempt. Arteaga had perhaps the Matadors' best look in the 82nd minute when she had room from above the box but her shot went just high of the crossbar. Fitzgerald would save the Matadors' last attempt, also off the foot of Arteaga, with about six minutes left in the contest.
GAME NOTES
Alarcon's goal was the first of her career while she became the 12th different Matador to record a goal this season. Sundstrom, who recorded her second assist on the Alarcon goal, moved into the team lead in points with six.
Sydney Gilbert played in her 70th career game with the Matadors on Sunday while Gabriela Robles appeared in her 50th. The trio of Gilbert, Robles and Alarcon played the full 90 minutes in the match.
Sunday's match represented the first-ever conference match between CSUN and UC San Diego and just the second overall between the two programs.
