CSUN Falls at UC Santa Barbara, 2-0
10/7/2021 10:16:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-11, 1-3 Big West) suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match on Thursday at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos scored in the third minute and added an insurance goal in the 66th minute to prevail over the Matadors. Amanda Delgado finished with three saves, all of which in the second half.
UCSB narrowly outshot CSUN 10-9 and led 5-3 in shots on goal. The Gauchos also had five of the six corner kicks in the match. A total of 22 fouls were committed on Thursday with UC Santa Barbara whistled for 12 of them while CSUN had 10. Both Erin Anderson and Cora Willcot saw the yellow cards late in the match.
FIRST HALF
The Gauchos wasted little time striking first in the opening moments of the match. After a CSUN foul at the 2:47 mark of the first half, a free kick into the CSUN box resulted in two headers with the second one coming from Lauren Moss that hit the net. The early goal forced CSUN to have to play an uphill battle throughout the remainder of the match. Shortly after the UCSB goal, Alyssa Aguilar had a pair of shots blocked away by the Gaucho defense. Cindy Arteaga later missed wide of the net in the 17th minute before Briana Rios had a shot saved by goalkeeper Evann Smith.
CSUN posted five of the eight shots in the first half but was unable to breakthrough against a tough UCSB defense in the final third of the field. Smith made her second save of the half on an attempt from Kacie Garrity in the 39th minute to help keep UCSB ahead.
SECOND HALF
UCSB pressured the CSUN defense looking to double its lead in the early stages of the second half. Delgado made two saves in the first four minutes of the period including thwarting a Gaucho corner kick opportunity. The Matador goalkeeper would also be tested in the 58th minute when she stopped a header from Alyssa O'Brien. However, O'Brien would have a chance to strike again following another Gaucho corner kick. Off that set piece, Emma Vanderhyden sent the ball through the box and to the far post where O'Brien finished from eight yards past Delgado and Angelica Claiborne at the net.
CSUN would perhaps have its best look at the net in the 76th minute shortly after a UCSB foul. With the ball placed on the right wing, a kick into the box found Sami Alarcon who headed the ball just high of the goal. Arteaga took the Matadors' last shot of the night with less than seven minutes to play but her attempt was not on target.
GAME NOTES
Arteaga had a team-high three shots for CSUN while Aguilar had two. Alarcon, Gabriela Robles and Sydney Gilbert all played the full 90 minutes on the field. Thursday's match represented the 14th different starting lineup for the Matadors this season.
Prior to the match, 10 of the last 11 games in the CSUN and UCSB series were decided by one goal. The last two-goal decision between the two teams was during the 2010 season when the Gauchos won 2-0. The teams also played to a 1-1 draw in the 2017 season.
UP NEXT
CSUN wraps up a three-match road trip on Sunday against Cal Poly. Kickoff is slated for noon. The Mustangs will provide a live video stream for the match.
