Matadors Head Up Central Coast for Matches with UCSB, Cal Poly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-11, 1-2 Big West) visits the Central Coast this week for a pair of Big West Conference matches. The Matadors take on UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 7 p.m. before facing Cal Poly on Sunday at noon. Both home schools will provide live video streams for each contest.
CSUN dropped its second straight conference match last Sunday at UC San Diego, 3-1. After Sami Alarcon netted her first career goal in the 12th minute, the Tritons answered back with three unanswered goals over a 14-minute span in the first half. The Matadors outshot the Tritons 5-4 in the second half but could not find the back of the net to mount a comeback. Amanda Delgado was credited with one save in the match.
With Alarcon's goal on Sunday, 12 Matadors have now registered goals for the first time since 2015. Christiane Sundstrom, who assisted Alarcon, leads the team in points with six while Cindy Arteaga and Brooke Mobeck have five points apiece. The trio of Sundstrom, Mobeck and Gabriela Robles share the team lead with two goals. In front of the net, Amanda Delgado has 36 saves in 630 minutes on the field to go with a 2.71 goals-against-average. CSUN scores 1.15 goals per game while the team has surrendered 3.08 goals a game.
UC Santa Barbara leads CSUN 16-11-1 in the all-time series but the Matadors have had recent success with seven wins over the last 10 meetings. The teams faced off twice in the 2019 season with CSUN prevailing twice by 1-0 decisions. The Matadors eliminated the Gauchos from the Big West Tournament in 2019 when Alexis White scored a golden goal in the 100th minute. The squads have played four overtime games over the last six meetings with CSUN going 3-0-1 in those OT matches. UCSB prevailed in the last match in Santa Barbara in 2018 (2-1).
The Matadors are 9-8-3 all-time against Cal Poly. CSUN has won five of the last six meetings including the teams' last game in 2019. The Matadors won that match 2-0 behind goals from Arteaga and Gabriela Hinojosa at CSUN. The teams last met in San Luis Obispo in 2018 with Cal Poly winning 1-0. Over the last five matches at Cal Poly, CSUN has gone 3-1-1.
A Closer Look at UC Santa Barbara
The Gauchos come in 4-6-3 on the season with a 2-1-1 record in Big West play. Last week, UCSB went unbeaten as the Gauchos beat UC Davis 1-0 before battling to a scoreless draw with Hawai'i. Prior to the season, the Gauchos were picked to finish third in the Big West by the conference coaches. The program's all-time leader in wins, head coach Paul Stumpf is in his 23rd season leading UC Santa Barbara.Â
Seven players make up the Gauchos' eight goals on the season with Lauren Helwig leading the team with two goals. Helwig along with Shaye Douglas have a team-best four points. Claire Grouwinkel is a Preseason All-Big West honoree for the Gauchos. The reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, Evann Smith has a 1.18 GAA with 46 saves and a Big West-leading five shutouts.
A Closer Look at Cal Poly
The Mustangs have posted a 7-6 record and 3-1 league mark on the season. With nine points, Cal Poly is a point out of first place in the Big West. Last week, Cal Poly defeated Hawai'i 2-1 but fell to UC Davis 2-0. The Mustangs were selected to finish seventh in the Big West by the conference coaches. One of the top winningest coaches all-time nationally, Alex Crozier is in his 29th season at the helm of Cal Poly.
The Mustangs have two of the top three goal scorers in the Big West with Preseason All-Conference honoree Camille Lafaix and Nikki Trucco having six goals apiece. Cal Poly leads the Big West in scoring with 25 goals already this season as 11 different players have hit the net. Ava Dorvillier has 48 saves on the season along with a 1.63 GAA for the Mustangs.
