CSU Bakersfield Hands CSUN a Four-Set Home Loss
11/6/2021 9:13:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Looking for its first series win over an opponent this season, the CSUN Women's Volleyball came up short as visiting CSU Bakersfield avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to the Matadors by topping CSUN 3-1 (25-22. 20-25, 25-17, 25-18) in a Big West match Saturday night at The Matadome.
With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 15-7 overall and 8-6 in the Big West while the Matadors drop to 5-19 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Sophomore Taylor Orshoff led all hitters in the match with 16 kills, hitting .263 on 38 attacks. Orshoff also had a pair of blocks and one dig.
• Seniors Nicole Nevarez and Seyvion Waggoner also reached double figures in kills for the second straight night as Nevarez added 11 kills (.182) while Waggoner chipped in 10 kills (.172) and five digs. With her fifth kill of the night, Nevarez reached 700 kills in her CSUN career.
• Redshirt freshman Taylor Hunter had nine kills (.263), three blocks and two digs while senior Lexi McLeod posted seven kills (.130) and 14 digs, two behind Makayla Bradford's team-high 16.
• CSUN setters Carisa Barron and Madison Klungel combined for 45 assists, 15 digs and two aces in the loss.
• The Matadors were out-hit .207-.179 by the Roadrunners who also had advantages in digs (69-61) and blocks (10.0-7.0). CSUB also dominated at the service line with 11 aces to CSUN's three.
• Hana Makanova (.308) and Hayley McCluskey (.194) each had 11 kills to lead the Roadrunners.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"I am disappointed with the loss tonight, especially after we played so well last night. We came out a little flat but I thought we turned it around in the second set. Overall, I thought Bakersfield was better at the serve-pass game tonight which was the difference in the match."
FIRST SET
The Matadors scored the first point of the match on an Orshoff kill but the visitors claimed six of the next eight points to open up a 6-3 cushion. CSUB extended the margin to four at 9-5 following a CSUN hitting error before the Matadors used a 6-2 run to tie the score at 11-11. CSUN could not re-gain the lead however as the Roadrunners put together a 7-3 run to again lead by four at 18-14. The Matadors battled back to trim the lead to one four times, the last at 22-21, when a Hunter-Waggoner block pulled CSUN even at 22-22. But CSUB would claim the final three points to take a 25-22 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET
After hitting .204 in the opening set, the Matadors bounced back to hit .333 in the second set to even the match. CSUN claimed three of the first four points before the two teams traded sideouts until 15-15. After two straight CSUB points gave the Roadrunners a 17-15 edge, kills from Orshoff and Hunter again tied the score. Makanova's kill kept CSUB in front before the Matadors scored four straight to open up a 21-18 lead. The Roadrunners cut the lead to two following at timeout but CSUN would claim four of the final five points in a 25-20 win.
THIRD SET
After an Orshoff kill pulled the Matadors within 5-4, the visitors outscored CSUN 8-2 over the next 10 points to push the lead to 13-6. The Matadors would get within five on three different occasions, the last at 20-15, before CSUB sealed a 25-17 when Makanova and Seleisa Elisaia stuffed a Nevarez attack.
FOURTH SET
The final set was similar to the third as the Roadrunners used a 6-0 run to snap a 9-9 tie. The Matadors battled back behind an 8-1 run to take a 17-16 lead following another Orshoff kill. A CSUB kill followed by a Roadrunner block saw the lead change hands (18-17) before a McLeod kill knotted the score for the final time. A kill by Elisaia on the ensuing point sent CSUB on a set-clinching 7-0 run that ended the match.
