4/3/2021 7:20:00 PM | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN dropped a pair of games to Long Beach State in a Big West softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond.
GAME 1
Long Beach State defeated CSUN 9-1 in the opening game of the day.
The Beach did their damage in the second and third innings. Long Beach State scored three times in the top of the second. The Beach sent 10 batters to the plate in the third before recording five in the third.
Jaymi Steward's two-out double in the bottom of the third plated Aaliyah Swan. The Matadors threatened in the fourth, putting the first two batter on. Kellie White, The Beach starter, worked out of the jam, retiring the next three CSUN batters in a row to keep it at 8-1.
CSUN again put two runners on base in the fifth, this time with one out. White walked Matador cleanup hitter Kenedee Jamerson to load the bases. White struck out Paloma Usquiano looking for the second out. Maiya Alemania grounded out to third to end the inning.
Justine Briones' two-out RBI double in the seventh added to The Beach's lead. The Matadors stranded their 10th and 11th runners on base in the seventh as CSUN put two on in scoring position but could not push across a run.
White picked up her ninth win of the year, pitching five innings. She struck out seven and walked two. Samantha Fowler tossed the final two for LBSU, striking out three. Breezy Wise went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI for Long Beach State. Alemania and Swan each posted two hits for the Matadors.
GAME 2
The Beach (12-5, 8-1 Big West) defeated CSUN 6-3 in the nightcap.
Long Beach State scored twice with two outs in the top of the first to take the lead. The Beach struck again with two outs in the second when Alyssa Gonzalez hit a three-run home run. A sixth two-out run was scored in the third when Cam Cecil drove in Emily Salazar with a single.
Gonzalez and Suzy Brookshire both recorded three hits to pace the offense for The Beach. LBSU's Shannon Haddad struck out 11 and walked one over the first five innings. After retiring 10 in a row at one point, she did not give up a hit until Usquiano led off the fifth with a double. She only gave up two hits before giving way to Sophia Fernandez in the sixth.
Fernandez gave up a single to Swan to lead off the sixth. Steward followed with her second home run of the year, a two-run blast to right-center. Fernandez walked pinch-hitter, Jaclyn Silva. Fowler relieved Fernandez to face Alemania. Alemania fouled out. Usquiano struck out. Tatum Wentworth grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the final out.
Sami Garcia opened the CSUN seventh with an infield single. She advanced to second on a Fowler wild pitch. Journey Rojas singled to left to advance Garcia to third. Savannah Favre popped out. Swan's sacrifice fly scored Garcia and allowed Rojas to move up a base. Steward flew out to center for the final out.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"I thought Long Beach did a great job of capitalizing on our mistakes once again in game one. We have to do a better job from the start to give ourselves a chance to get going. Offensively, we did a good job of making adjustments throughout the day and had some quality at-bats. Our defensive was a little bit better in the second game. We continued to fight throughout the day. We will have to make some adjustments during the week to get ready for Cal State Fullerton."
The Matadors (2-7, 2-7 Big West) are at league-leading Titans (21-11 6-0 Big West) next weekend. The series gets underway Friday at 6 p.m.
