8/19/2021 9:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer surrendered two first-half goals in its 2-0 loss to Long Beach State on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Amanda Delgado posted five saves in net while Sophie Yanez had two of the Matadors five shots on the evening. The game was CSUN's 2021 season opener and the first game for the women's soccer program since the 2019 season.
Long Beach State posted a 15-5 edge in shots and 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Each side had eight fouls in the contest.
FIRST HALF
CSUN recorded the game's first shot as Angelica Claiborne missed wide in the second minute of play. The Beach would go on offense over the next several minutes, testing the Matadors' defense. The Matadors thwarted a Beach corner kick attempt while the defense blocked a shot from Myah Baksh in the 11th minute.
CSUN would slow down the Beach's attack until the 25th minute when a drive up the left side of the field led to the game's first goal. Summer Laskey would bring the ball up the left wing and deliver shot that Delgado batted away. The CSUN goalkeeper was unable to maintain possession, giving Kayla Cannon an opportunity to clean up the play and give the Beach a 1-0 lead.Â
Long Beach State struck again less than three minutes later following a CSUN foul. Daria Petredes made a move near the top of the box and found room to send a shot up and into the corner of the right netting, doubling the Beach lead to 2-0.
Delgado did her best to keep the Matadors within striking distance with her second save of the half off a shot from Lena Silano in the 39th minute. Meanwhile, the Matadors were outshot 8-1 in the opening stanza.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors went on the attack right out of halftime as Cora Willcot shot wide just two minutes into the half. Delgado continued to impress in net, making stops in the in the 56th and 57th minutes, keeping the lead at two goals. Long Beach State controlled the clock for most of the second half and limited CSUN to two shot attempts in the period until the final minute.
Breaking through the stingy Beach defense, the Matadors nearly came away with a goal in the final minute of the second period. Playing on the Beach's half of the field down the stretch, CSUN moved the ball into the box where Sophie Yanez delivered a shot toward the left corner of the goal. Goalkeeper Morgan Houston-Shepherd made a stop going to her right but Yanez picked up the rebound for a second attempt. With Houston-Shepherd out of position, the Beach's defense made a team save to thwart the Matadors' last-second attack.
GAME NOTES
A total of seven Matadors made their debut with the program with Claiborne, Erin Anderson, Ashly Torres and Christiane Sundstrom earning the start. Off the bench, Dayne Wagner, Brooke Mobeck and Sami Alarcon also appeared in their first career CSUN game.
Alyssa Aguilar made her return to the pitch for the first time since Sept. 13, 2018. Missing all but seven games in the 2018 season and all of the 2019 campaign, Aguilar played in eight minutes late in the first half against Long Beach State.
On the backline, Gabriela Robles and Anderson each played the full 90 minutes on Thursday.
