CSUN Defeats Iowa State to Pick Up First Win of the Season
8/22/2021 1:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Kacie Garrity broke a 1-1 tie in the 67th minute to help lift CSUN Women's Soccer (1-1) to a 2-1 victory over Iowa State on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. Ashley Cruz also collected her first career goal in the first half while Amanda Delgado recorded two saves in net. The victory was the Matadors' first win over a Big 12 Conference team since 2010.
Iowa State edged CSUN in shot attempts, 9-7, but the Matadors had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Matadors also took six corner kicks to the Cyclones' one. CSUN's Gabriela Robles and Ashly Torres and Iowa State's Tyra Shand were shown yellow cards.
FIRST HALF
Both sides played even in the opening minutes with neither side able to put a shot on goal over the first 16-plus minutes. CSUN eventually marched up the left side of the field where Cindy Arteaga crossed the ball toward the middle of the box. The ball traveled through players from both teams to Cruz who dribbled up the box and found of the back of the net from less than 15 yards.
After a pair of missed shots from Christiane Sundstrom and Cruz, the Cyclones would capitalize off a CSUN turnover to come away with the equalizer. In the 28th minute, Lauren McConnell passed to Anna Lindgren who then crossed the ball to Mira Emma inside the box. Emma would kick the ball past Delgado and into the net tying the game at 1-1 apiece.
CSUN held the Cyclones to one shot the rest of the way while a Matador corner kick in the 35th minute was thwarted as the game remained tied at intermission.
SECOND HALF
The Cyclones recorded the first four shots of the second half with Delgado making two saves in the 51st minute. After Arteaga put a shot on goal, Alexis White broke away from the defense and sent a low shot toward the net before goalkeeper Cora Anderson made a two-handed save in the 57th minute.
CSUN continued to chip away at the Iowa State defense and eventually earned a free kick nearly 30 yards out from the goal in the 67th minute. Dayne Wagner took the kick and sent the ball into a crowd near the top of the box. Garrity would corral the pass and find room before depositing a shot into the left corner of the netting, giving the Matadors a 2-1 lead.
The Cyclones pressed the Matadors defense looking for the game-tying strike. CSUN though continued to keep the Cyclones at bay and minimize any dangerous attempts at the net. After three free kicks, the Cyclones finally had their best chance at tying the game in the closing seconds. With just six seconds renaming, a free kick found Emma at the top center of the box but her shot went high as the final seconds came off the clock, giving the Matadors the victory.
GAME NOTES
CSUN's win over Iowa State was the team's first over a Big 12 Conference team since defeating Kansas on Sept. 10, 2010. The win was also the Matadors' first home win over a Big 12 team since beating Baylor on Sept. 14, 2007.
Garrity's goal was her second of her career while Wagner recorded her first career point with an assist on the play. Arteaga notched her first career assist on the Cruz goal.
UP NEXT
The Matadors will play their next six games away from home beginning with a Thursday match against Stanford at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
