FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-1-0) kicks off a six-game road swing this week with a pair of matches. The Matadors first visit Stanford on Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network before facing UC Irvine in a non-conference game on Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
CSUN officially began its 26th season of women's soccer last week as the Matadors split of a pair of home matches. Long Beach State defeated CSUN in the 2021 season opener last Thursday, 2-0. The Matadors though bounced back by knocking off Iowa State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
CSUN would be outshot in the season opener by a 15-5 margin while the Beach held the Matadors to two shots on goal. Kayla Cannon broke up a scoreless tie in the 25th minute and Daria Petredes added a second goal less than three minutes later to give Long Beach State a 2-0 lead. Amanda Delgado would rack up five saves in net and would help keep the Beach scoreless in the second half but it would not be enough to overcome Long Beach State.
On Sunday, the Matadors flipped the script by scoring first against Iowa State as Ashley Cruz hit her first career goal off a cross from Cindy Arteaga in the 17th minute. The Cyclones evened the match in the 28th minute and the score remained tied for nearly the next 40 minutes. CSUN defender Kacie Garrity gave the Matadors the lead in the 67th minute, scoring off a set piece and a pass from Dayne Wagner that proved to be the game winner. Delgado tallied two saves in front of the net while the CSUN defense stood tall, holding the Cyclones to a single shot attempt over the last 39 minutes.
The win over Iowa State was the Matadors first win over a Big 12 Conference team since 2010 and just the program's third overall in team history. CSUN's last win against a Big 12 team came against Kansas in a neutral-site game. The Matadors also defeated Baylor in a home match in 2007.
CSUN's victory on Sunday was also Delgado's 15th recorded in net. Currently sixth in team history in wins, Delgado needs one win to move into a fifth-place tie with Cynthia Tafoya (2012-15). Also with 33 career starts in goal, Delgado is a start away from climbing into sixth place in CSUN history, which is occupied by three players - Jen Jasper (2002-03), Karen Comstock (2002-05) and April Cline (2005-06).
CSUN will face Stanford for the first time in program history on Thursday evening. The Matadors, who are scheduled to face five Pac-12 teams this season, have not won against a team from the conference since 2013 when they defeated Oregon State at home. CSUN's only road win over a Pac-12 team came in 1999 against Oregon.
The Matadors lead the all-time series with UC Irvine 11-8-4 including going 5-4-2 on the road. CSUN has won four of the last five meetings with the 2019 meeting going the Matadors way in overtime (1-0). UC Irvine defeated CSUN in the teams' last game played at Anteater Stadium in 2018 by a 3-0 final. Three of the last four meetings though have been decided by a 1-0 score.
