Matadors Fall to #13 Stanford to Kick Off Road Trip
8/26/2021 10:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Stanford outshot CSUN by a 29-4 margin with 17 of the Cardinal's shots on goal. The home team also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. CSUN was whistled for 12 fouls while Stanford had 11.
FIRST HALF
Stanford went on the attack at the outset of the game, posting two shots in the fifth minute that Delgado stopped in front of the net. CSUN's defense would withstand four corner kicks and two more shot attempts before Stanford broke through with a goal from Maya Doms in the 11th minute. Delgado momentarily kept the score at 1-0 after saving a header shot from Kennedy Wesley but Stanford struck again minutes later off a set piece. Doms recorded her second goal in the 16th minute, scoring off a pass from Sierra Enge.
Five Matador fouls continued to keep the ball with Stanford, which led to more scoring opportunities. Enge picked up her second assist of the half on a pass to Belle Briede to give the Cardinal a three-goal lead. Just 19 seconds later, Stanford scored again, this time taking advantage of an open net when Delgado tried to break up a play near the left wing. Abby Greubel scored Stanford's fourth goal of the half on the play.
SECOND HALF
Held without a shot for the entire first half, the Matadors received their first shot attempt from Christiane Sundstrom in the 54th minute but her attempt went wide. Bornhauser came off the bench looking to give the Cardinal a different look in front of the net. The Matador freshman saved three shots quickly to start the half before the high-powered Cardinal offense broke through in the 63d minute. Doms recorded her third goal of the night off a header in the 63rd minute and Greubel added another six minutes later to put CSUN into a 6-0 hole.
Julia Leontini capped Stanford's scoring on the night in the 79th minute making it a 7-0 game. CSUN would put its first shot on frame in the 83rd minute when Ashly Torres delivered an attempt that was saved by Stanford goalkeeper Ryan Campbell.
GAME NOTES
The quartet of Sundstrom, Torres, Sydney Gilbert, Sophie Yanez registered shots in the match with Torres' attempt being the lone shot on goal. Bornhauser made her CSUN debut in the second half, registering five saves in 45 minutes. Freshman Riley Goossen-Brown also appeared in her first career match in the second half.
Delgado moved into sixth place in CSUN history in career matches played in goal. Three other Matadors occupy sixth place on the list, which includes Jen Jasper (2002-03), Karen Comstock (2002-05) and April Cline (2005-06).
UP NEXT
The Matadors continue their road trip on Sunday evening against UC Irvine in a non-conference match. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. and the game will broadcast on ESPN+ with David Gascon on the call.
