Matadors Drop Season-Opener to Denver at Trojan Invitational
8/27/2021 12:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Despite an impressive performance from Taylor Hunter in her collegiate debut, CSUN dropped its season-opener to Denver 25-18. 25-15, 25-21 Friday in the opening match of the Trojan Invitational at USC's Galen Center.
The Matadors (0-1) were limited to an .090 hitting clip by the Pioneers (1-0) who hit .303 in the win.
KEY STATISTICS
• Hunter, a redshirt freshman from Simi Valley, knocked down a team-high eight kills on 10 swings with just one error to hit .700. She also added four block assists in the loss.
• Senior Nicole Nevarez added seven kills (.176), five digs and one ace while fellow senior Lexi McLeod chipped in four kills (.000), five digs and one ace.
• The Matadors utilized a pair of freshmen setters in the opener as Carisa Barron posted 11 assists, four digs and one ace while Madison Klungel had 10 assists, three digs along with one ace.
• CSUN, which hadn't played a competitive match since November of 2019, overcame a rough start as the Matadors hit better in each set. After hitting .000 in the opening frame, CSUN hit .150 in set two and .167 in set three to hit .090 (26-18-89) for the match.
• Denver's Lydia Bartalo led all hitters in the match with 11 kills (.348) as the Pioneers connected at a .303 clip (41-14-89). Denver also had eight team aces to five for the Matadors while also out-digging CSUN 36-24.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSAÂ SAID
"After not being on the court for 585 days I thought we started the match with some nerves but was happy how we came together and competed against an experienced Denver team. I thought we served and blocked well and Taylor (Hunter) played well in her first match. We have a very young team with several players getting their first experience at the Division-I level today but I am excited for the future of this team."
SET 1
After the Pioneers claimed the first four points of the match, the Matadors battled back behind an 8-3 run to take their only lead at 8-7. Kills from Hunter, Lauryn Anderson along with aces from Barron and Nevarez highlighted the CSUN run. Two straight Denver points saw the Pioneers retake the lead as they eventually pushed the lead to 14-11 forcing a Matador timeout. A Denver hitting error cut the lead to one at 14-13 and a Pioneer service error also kept CSUN within one (15-14) but Denver would close the set on a 10-4 run to claim the opening set, 25-18.
SET 2
The two teams played even volleyball for the opening seven points when the Pioneers used a 7-2 run to extend a 4-3 lead to 11-5. A Taylor Orshoff block capped a 3-1 Matador run out of a timeout that temporarily trimmed the lead to 12-8 but six straight Denver points boosted the lead to 10 at 18-8. A McLeod kill pulled the Matadors within eight at 22-14 but CSUN would get no closer, dropping the set 25-15.
SET 3
The final set was the tightest of the match as the Matadors battled back from an early 3-0 hole. McLeod's ace cut the lead to one at 3-2, Hunter's kill trimmed the lead to one at 4-3 before Anderson's kill again kept CSUN within one at 8-7. Still down by one at 12-11 following a Nevarez kill, the Matadors surrendered a 4-1 run as the Pioneers opened up a 16-12 cushion, forcing a CSUN timeout. The Matadors rallied to within one three times down the stretch - the last at 19-18 - when Denver outscored the Matadors 6-3 over the final nine points to complete the sweep.
