Matadors Suffer 3-1 Defeat at Portland State
9/10/2021 12:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HILLSBORO, Ore.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-6-0) surrendered two second-half goals to Portland State in a 3-1 loss on Friday at Hillsboro Stadium. Brooke Mobeck notched her first career goal in the first half, tying the game before intermission. Amanda Delgado picked up five saves in front of the net.
Despite the result, the Matadors led in shots (17-13), shots on goal (10-8) and corner kicks (5-2). The Matadors were whistled for 11 fouls while the Vikings committed five fouls. Dayne Wagner, Briana Rios and Portland State's Raniyah Burton and Lucy Quinn all saw yellow cards in the match.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors came out as the aggressors in the opening 10 minutes with four shots recorded over that span. Attempts off the feet of Alyssa Aguilar and Ashley Cruz were on frame while Cindy Arteaga just missed the right post with an attempt past the 18-yard mark. The Vikings would post their first shot in the 15th minute after Delgado came off her line to clear the ball out of the box. Seeing an empty box, Hailey Green deposited a deep shot but Delgado returned back to her post to make the save. Delgado also made a timely save a minute later when Chloe Huling had room on the left side of the box. The Matador goalkeeper was able to get a touch on the shot attempt from Huling before Gabriela Robles cleared out the ball to prevent a goal.
After neither side was able to find the net for over 42 minutes, each team scored over a 34-second span late in the half. The Vikings would move the ball into CSUN's box in the 43rd minute when a costly foul by Wagner forced a penalty kick. Sienna Higinbotham took the shot and scored to give the Vikings the 1-0 advantage. However, the lead wa shortlived as the Matadors quickly marched up the field seconds later. A drive from Cora Willcot down the left wing resulted in a shot attempt that was stopped by the Viking defense. In a wild sequence, Angelica Claiborne headed a second shot that grazed the post then Mobeck cleaned up the play with a tapper to tie the game at 1-1.
SECOND HALF
It would be Portland State who came out quickly after intermission. After Huling missed wide of the net, the Vikings played the ball on CSUN's side of the field until a deep shot from Ani Jensen from 25 yards out hit inside the corner of the left post for Portland State's second goal of the day. Trailing by a 2-1 score, the Matadors would press the Portland State defense in effort to tie the game once more. Arteaga and Robles had shots saved by goalkeeper Sidney O'billovich while Rios had her shot blocked by the Viking defense.Â
Entering the game at the start of the second half, O'billovich provided Portland State with stingy defense in front of the net, saving five Matador shot attempts in the period. Claiborne would have both of her shot attempts saved by the Viking goalkeeper. In closing minutes, Portland State picked up a crucial insurance goal to seal the win. With less than five minutes to play, a long ball from Hannah Grady to a streaking Megan Cornett brought Delgado out from her line. Cornett finished the play with a goal from 18 yards out into an open net to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. CSUN's last look came in the closing seconds when Aguilar had a chance to score from three yards out but O'Billovich was able to snuff out the attempt.
GAME NOTES
Mobeck is the eighth different Matador to score a goal this season and the fifth first-time career goal scorer. Claiborne had three shots to lead the Matadors while Aguilar, Arteaga and Cruz had two shots apiece. CSUN's 17 shots in the match are a season high.
