Matadors Lose High-Scoring Battle to UC Davis, 4-2
9/26/2021 3:41:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---UC Davis (7-3-0, 2-0-0 Big West) scored four unanswered goals in the second half and held off CSUN (2-10-0, 1-1-0 Big West) for a 4-2 triumph on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Gabriela Robles scored her second goal in as many matches while Christiane Sundstrom tallied her second goal of the season. Elizabeth Bornhauser had seven saves in the match. All six goals scored were in the second half of play.
UC Davis outshot CSUN 19-15 and led 11-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went the Aggies' way at 11-2. Eleven total fouls were committed in the match with CSUN whistled for seven of them.
FIRST HALF
While no goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes, each team came within inches of hitting the net on several occasions. Cindy Arteaga almost put the Matadors on top in the fourth minute when her shot struck the right post. After hitting the post, the ball went back into play before goalkeeper Nicki Rucki pounced on it to prevent a second shot attempt. Bornhauser also made two saves in the opening seven minutes of play to help keep the game scoreless.
The Aggies' Rita Yamada would hit the crossbar on a shot from inside the 18-yard line. Later in the half, Arteaga came close again from putting the Matadors on top when her shot banged off the crossbar in the 42nd minute of play. In a frantic sequence, Alyssa Aguilar rebounded the shot from Arteaga and delivered an attempt that was blocked by the defense. Seconds later, Arteaga delivered a third CSUN shot and again missed by inches with a strike that hit the right post.
SECOND HALF
The Aggies would take the first two shots of the second half but it was the Matadors who came up with the first goal. After a CSUN corner kick, Brooke Mobeck found Robles on the right side of the field. Robles took a dribble then bent a shot that sailed inside the left post and into the netting to give CSUN a 1-0 lead at the 48-minute mark. The Matadors almost doubled their lead a minute later on an attempt from Sydney Gilbert that hit off the crossbar.
CSUN continued to lead by a goal until the 56th minute when the Aggies took over offensively. Yamada evened the match with a strike from eight yards after a pair of passes from Emma Vane and Leslie Fregoso. Six minutes later, UC Davis broke the tie following a throw-in. Alana Curtis would cross the ball through the box to Molly Branigan who finished from the center of the box. The Aggies were far from done as Fregoso tallied her team's third goal off a pass from Curtis in the 71st minute. CSUN surrendered its fourth goal less than six minutes later on Yamada's second of the contest.
Looking up at a three-goal deficit, CSUN continued to battle in the closing minutes. After falling behind 4-1, the Matadors answered with a goal of their own two minutes later. Marching up the field, Sundstrom collected a cross from Erin Anderson and hit the net to bring the Matadors to within two. The deficit though would be too much to overcome as the Aggies held on for a 4-2 win in the closing seconds.
GAME NOTES
Robles and Sundstrom's goals were the second of their respective careers with the Matadors. Mobeck and Anderson also notched their first assists of the season. Robles, Anderson and Sami Alarcon played the full 90 minutes on the backline.
Arteaga finished with a team-high six shots while Aguilar finished with three off the bench.
