FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-10, 1-1 Big West) hits the road for a Big West Conference match with UC San Diego this Sunday at 4 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Matadors opened their 20th season of Big West Conference play last week and split their first two matches. CSUN came from behind and earned its first road win of the season at Hawai'i in the conference opener, 3-2. The Matadors would drop their home conference opener though to UC Davis, 4-2.
Last Thursday in Hawai'i, the Matadors gave up the first goal of the contest in the 17th minute but responded with the equalizer off the foot of Cindy Arteaga later in the first half. Gabriela Robles would put the Matadors up for good with her first career goal in the 51st minute. Brooke Mobeck added to CSUN's lead with the team's third goal of the match, which proved to be a crucial insurance goal. CSUN gave up a late score in the 86th minute but stood tall in the closing seconds to hold off Hawai'i. Amanda Delgado finished with two saves in net for CSUN.
Three days later, the Matadors and Aggies battled in a back-and-forth contest with six goals scored in the second half alone. Robles scored for the second consecutive match in the 48th minute to break the scoreless tie. However, CSUN's lead was short-lived as the Aggies scored four unanswered goals over a 21-minute span. Christiane Sundstrom would bring CSUN to within 4-2 in the 79th minute but a Matador comeback was not in the cards. CSUN had three shots on goal in the match but four shots, three of which from Arteaga, hit either the post or the crossbar.
With Arteaga and Robles hitting the net last Thursday in Hawai'i, 11 Matadors have scored goals this season. The trio of Robles, Mobeck and Sundstrom have two goals scored to lead the team while Arteaga is tied with Mobeck and Sunstrom with a team-high five points apiece. Both Elizabeth Bornhauser and Delgado have earned significant minutes this season with Bornhauser seeing the most (551) to go with a team-high 39 saves. Delgado has played in 540 minutes and tallied 35 saves. The Matadors have averaged 1.17 goals per game this season and are coming off back-to-back games of multiple goals scored. CSUN though has yet to shut out an opponent on the year and has not allowed less than two goals since defeating Iowa State on Aug. 22.
Despite thirteen of the Matadors' 16 returners seeing the field this season, CSUN has fielded a mostly young team on the field. Of the team's 16 returners, only Sydney Gilbert has played more than two years of Division I soccer before 2021. Eight of the 16 returners had two or fewer years of Division I soccer experience while nine newcomers had never played in a collegiate game. Mobeck and Sundstrom, two Division I transfers, have played one and two years, respectively, at the D-1 level prior to this season.
Seventeen days ago, CSUN and UC San Diego faced off for the first-ever time in women's soccer in a non-conference match at Matador Soccer Field. The Tritons would win that meeting, 2-1, with both goals scored by Kennedy Carter while Cora Willcot tallied the Matadors' lone goal of the contest. The Matadors played without several regulars in the contest as Arteaga, Gilbert, Robles and Kacie Garrity all did not play.
A Closer Look at UC San Diego
The Tritons have gone 3-6-1 overall in their first season competing at the Division I level in women's soccer. UCSD split its first two conference matches last week, first losing in the closing seconds at Long Beach State (2-1) before bouncing back with a 1-0 road win at UC Irvine. The Tritons have played just three home matches this season, posting a 0-2-1 record in those games. Before making the jump to the Division I ranks, the Tritons were a perennial NCAA Tournament team at the Division II level with five-straight postseason appearances. Head coach Kristin Jones is in her third season leading the program. UCSD hosts CSU Bakersfield on Thursday before meeting CSUN.
Kennedy Carter leads the Tritons in goals (5), points (11) and shots (25) this season. Caitlin McCarthy is second on the team in scoring with three goals and eight points. Five total players have hit the net for UCSD. Keara Fitzgerald has seen the most minutes in net with over 630 while she has a 1.85 goals-against-average and 31 saves. As a team, the Tritons average 1.10 goals and surrender 2.00 goals per contest.
