9/4/2021 5:22:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FRESNO, Calif. - Looking to split its two-match stay at the Fresno State Invitational, the CSUN women's volleyball team came up short in a straight-set loss to Loyola Marymount Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
Set scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 as the Lions improve to 4-1 this season. After falling to the host Bulldogs on Friday, the Matadors drop both matches in Fresno to slip to 1-4 on the season.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Seyvion Waggoner led CSUN with six kills against the Lions, hitting .056 on 18 swings. Waggoner also added one dig along with a solo block.
• Sophomore Taylor Orshoff and senior Nicole Nevarez each added four kills as Orshoff hit a team-high .231 on 13 attacks while Nevarez hit .200 on 15 swings.
• Setter Madison Klungel had a team-high 11 assists, three digs and one ace while Carisa Barron posted seven assists, two digs, one kill and one ace. Libero Makayla Bradford led the Matadors' defensive effort with a team-high 13 digs in the loss
• After hitting .014 as a team against Fresno State on Friday, CSUN struggled to a -.024 clip against LMU. The Lions nearly doubled the kill total of the Matadors (38-20) while hitting .312 in the win.
• LMU's Kari Geissberger led all hitters in the match with 14 kills (.429) while Rose Booth also reached double figures with 10 kills on 21 swings (.190).
COACH SUSIE TERRUSAÂ SAID
"We knew this preseason was going to be challenging for us because we missed out on so much training last year. This was another tough match. Our goal is to be a better team by the time the conference season starts and we will keep working hard to make that happen."
SET 1
After surrendering five of the first six points of the match, the Matadors took advantage of a pair of Lion errors and a Waggoner kill to get back within 5-4. An ensuing 5-0 LMU run forced a CSUN timeout at 10-4 before the Lions extended the run to 6-0 out of the timeout. Barron's ace pulled the Matadors within five at 12-7 before a 5-1 run by the Lions boosted the lead back to 17-9. Six points would be as close as CSUN would get the remainder of the set as LMU closed out the 25-16 win.Â
SET 2
The Lions led 7-1 after eight points before the Matadors used a Taylor Hunter kill to trim the lead to 8-3. CSUN still trailed by five (11-6) when the Lions claimed four of the next five points to extend the lead to 15-7. The Matadors were still within reach at 17-10 when five straight Lion points put the set out of reach at 22-10.
SET 3
CSUN got out to a good start in the final set, leading 6-4 following a Waggoner kill. But a Geissberger kill fueled a 4-0 LMU run which erased the Matador lead. Waggoner's kill ended the run and sent CSUN on a 4-2 run that tied the score at 10-10. But eight straight points by the Lions - coming on four kills and four Matador errors - gave LMU the margin it needed (18-10) to wrap up the match. Â
