COACH SUSIE TERRUSAÂ SAID
"I thought we played our best volleyball of the season in set one. The ability is there. We now have to work on maintaining that level of play throughout the match. It is a process that we will keep working on every day."
SET 1
After the hosts opened up a 6-3 lead in the early going, the Matadors used a 5-0 run - capped by a Waggoner kill - to take their first lead at 7-6. After the teams traded sideouts until 9-9, Nevarez put up a solo stuff to put CSUN back in front 10-9. A Nevarez kill gave the Matadors their largest lead of the set at 12-10 and CSUN maintained a two-point cushion at 13-11 following another Nevarez put-away. Three straight points by the Hornets put the hosts back in front to stay (15-13). Sac State would go on to lead by as many as four before a Waggoner kill trimmed the lead to 20-18. After the hosts built the lead back to four at 23-19, the Matadors scored three straight to pull within 23-22 following a Hornet hitting error. But Sac State used a pair of CSUN miscues over the final two points to take the set 25-22.
SET 2
The Hornets took advantage of some early Matador hitting errors to take a 5-0 lead before CSUN began to chip away at the lead. Still down three at 8-5, the Matadors used a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead following a Nevarez kill. CSUN maintained one-point leads at 10-9, 11-10, 13-12 and 14-13 before three straight Sac State points gave the hosts a 16-14 lead. The second of consecutive Anderson kills pulled the Matadors within one at 18-17 before two straight Sac State points forced a CSUN timeout at 20-17. The lead grew to four (22-18) when the Matadors called their final timeout before the Hornets closed the set 25-20.
SET 3
The Hornets bolted to a 7-1 lead in the final frame and never looked back. A Sac State block gave the hosts a double-figure lead at 14-4 and CSUN would get no closer than nine points the remainder of the set.  Â
