FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-5-0) continues its road trip on Friday morning when it takes on Portland State at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Matadors played a pair of games at the Sun Devil Classic hosted by Arizona State last weekend. CSUN dropped a 4-2 decision to Arizona State on Thursday before falling 3-2 to Arizona last Sunday.
It would be the Matadors who struck first in their match with Arizona State as Ashly Torres found Erin Anderson on a corner kick in the 21st minute. Anderson headed in what was her first career goal and it came against her former team in Arizona State. The Sun Devils though responded with three-straight goals to go into halftime ahead 3-1. After ASU added a fourth goal in the 52nd minute, the Matadors received a goal from Alyssa Aguilar, the first of her career, in the 76th minute. Elizabeth Bornhauser earned eight saves in net to help keep the Sun Devils off the scoreboard in the closing minutes.
Three days later, CSUN fell into an early 2-0 hole after back-to-back strikes from Arizona beginning in the 12th minute. Sydney Gilbert would cut the lead in half in the 29th minute after finishing off a play that was set up by Cindy Arteaga. CSUN though would go into intermission trailing 3-1 on a late strike from Jill Aguilera. Christiane Sundstrom once again brought the Matadors to within one on her first goal as a Matador in the 51st minute. However, the Matadors could not find the equalizer down the stretch of the half. In net, Amanda Delgado recorded a career-high 14 saves, two shy of the CSUN single-game school record.
All seven of the Matadors goals this season have been scored by different players including first-time career scorers Ashley Cruz, Sophie Yanez, Anderson and Aguilar. Sundstrom's goal was her first since scoring a goal in 2019 while with Utah State. Matador returners Gilbert and Kacie Garrity have the other two CSUN goals this season. Arteaga has a team-high two assists while Gilbert has tallied a team-high eight shots. As a team, the Matadors average seven shots per game. In net, Delgado is second in the Big West Conference in saves (26) and saves per game (6.5) while she has a .722 save percentage in four games.
The Matadors have played one of the toughest schedules in the Big West Conference through the first three weeks of the season, which has included two top-25 teams and four games against teams from Power Five conferences. CSUN's lone win on the season came against Iowa State on Aug. 22, which was the Matadors' first win over a Big 12 Conference team since 2010. Before the end of their non-conference schedule, the Matadors will also visit two more Pac-12 Conference opponents in UCLA (Sept. 13) and USC (Sept. 19).
CSUN leads Portland State 6-1 in the all-time series. The Matadors have won the last six meetings including the last two games played at Portland State. The last two matches though have been decided by a goal with the teams' last meeting in 2018 going into overtime. Amy Aquino would hit the golden goal for CSUN in that game in a 2-1 victory over the Vikings. In four games played at Portland State, the Matadors are 3-1.
