ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors (2-14-1, 0-7-1 Big West) went 0-2 last week on the road. CSUN dropped a tough 1-0 decision at UC Irvine on Thursday before falling to Long Beach State 4-1 on Sunday night.
CSUN would play the defending Big West champion UC Irvine even through the first 45 minutes until the Anteaters struck for the go-ahead goal in the 46th minute. The Matadors outshot the Anteaters in the second half including picking up a shot from Cindy Arteaga that hit the crossbar, but could not come up with the equalizer. LBSU would score three times in the first half against CSUN, eventually building a 4-0 lead in the second half before Arteaga broke up the shutout with a goal in the 68th minute.Â
MATADOR HEADLINES
Following the Matadors' home finale with UCSD, CSUN hits the road for the final time in 2022 for a road match at UC Riverside on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the regular season finale. CSUN still has an opportunity to surpass last season's win total by winning its last two matches of the year.
Cindy Arteaga enters the final two matches of the regular season with seven goals on the season, good enough for second place in The Big West. Arteaga is also second in the league in shots (70) and third in points (15). Her seven goals this season are tied for the eighth-most goals in a single season in team history, and four off the pace from all-time leader Cynthia Sanchez's 11 goals (2015).
Ashley Cruz is the only other Matador to hit the back of the next multiple times this season. She has two goals to go along with two assists for six points on the year while freshman Cassidy Imperial-Pham has one goal and one assists. Kacie Garrity shares the team lead in helpers (2) with Cruz. On the defensive end, freshman Hayden Mauldin has played a team-high 990 minutes in net and accumulated 55 saves and one shutout.
SENIOR SALUTE
CSUN will honor its four-member senior class of Cindy Arteaga, Gabriela Robles and Taylor Thames on Sunday prior to facing UC San Diego.
Arteaga has solidified herself as one of the top scorers in The Big West during her CSUN career. The three-year letterwinner has played in 58 career matches, tallying 10 goals and 25 points. Robles also scored twice last season, both of which coming in Big West play.
Thames has been a two-sport athlete at CSUN, splitting time as a goalkeeper with the women's soccer team and a sprinter on the track & field team. In net, Thames has earned five wins and three shutouts in 14 career appearances. Thames has 51 saves in six matches this season.
