Matadors Drop Road Match at UC Davis in Four Sets

DAVIS, Calif. – Nicole Nevarez and Taylor Orshoff combined for 23 kills but the CSUN women's volleyball team fell in four sets at UC Davis in the Matadors' penultimate road match of the 2022 season Saturday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21 as UC Davis improves to 14-14 overall and 9-9 in the Big West. The loss snaps a two-match winning streak for the Matadors who slip to 9-21 overall and 4-14 in conference play.
Nevarez put down a team-high 13 kills (.229) to boost her career kills total to 1,062. She now trails Angela Hupp and 11th place on the CSUN career list by 60 kills heading into the final week of the season. Orshoff added 10 kills (.214) and four digs but CSUN would just .134 as a team in the loss.
KEY STATISTICS
• Carisa Barron came within three kills of her seventh triple-double of the season as she posted 19 assists and 14 digs along with seven kills.
• Magdalena Juric chipped in five kills (.130) while Lauryn Anderson and Breanna Mitchell each had two aces.
• Mitchell also had a team-high 17 digs while Kaia Kanan added 12 assists and four digs.
• The Aggies hit .293 to CSUN's .134 and had 73 team digs to 58 for the Matadors. CSUN did post a slight 6-5 edge in team blocks.
• Olivia Utterback led all hitters with 20 kills (.425) while Demari Webb and Megan Lenn each chipped in 10.
SET 1
Trailing 3-2 following a Juric kill, the Matadors fell behind 8-2 when UC Davis scored five straight. A Webb kill opened up an eight-point cushion for the Aggies (12-4) before CSUN engineered a 9-2 run to close to within 14-13 following an Orshoff kill. But an ensuing 6-0 run by the hosts pushed the lead to 20-13 and the Aggies won going away 25-15.
SET 2
The Matadors surrendered the first three points of the second set, resulting in an early Matador timeout. CSUN was within three at 7-4 following an Orshoff kill but the Aggies claimed four of the next five points to extend the lead to six at 11-5. The Matadors whittled the lead down to three at 11-8 after kills by Nevarez, Orshoff and Juric before UCD answered with an 8-3 run to lead 19-11.CSUN would only get within six the rest of the way as the Aggies won by the score of 25-15.
SET 3
After hitting a collective .138 over the first two sets, the Matadors connected at a .344 clip to pull out a 25-22 win. The Aggies hit .412 in the frame as the two team committed just a pair of hitting errors combined. Neither team held more than a one-point lead until a pair of Aggie aces opened up a 16-13 lead. Another Orshoff kill would fuel a 5-2 CSUN run that tied the score at 18-18. The Matadors wouldn't take the lead until a kill by Nevarez followed by a Nevarez-Taylor Hunter block gave CSUN a 20-19 advantage. An Orshoff kill and a Mitchell ace put the Matadors up two (23-21) and CSUN extended the lead to 24-21 following an Aggie timeout. UCD saved one set point before the Matadors took advantage of an Aggie setting error to take a 25-22 win.
SET 4
Despite hitting -.054 in the final set, CSUN led 8-6 forcing the Aggies into an early timeout. The hosts came back with a 6-2 run to lead 12-10 when the Matadors answered with a 6-3 run to take their final lead at 16-15. The Aggies countered with a 5-1 run to lead 20-17 on their way to a 25-21.

The Matadors finish up the 2022 road schedule on Tuesday, traveling to UC Santa Barbara for a 7 p.m. first serve. CSUN then closes the season at home against Hawai'i on Saturday at 7 p.m.
