No. 3 UCLA Defeats CSUN in 2022 Softball Opener
2/10/2022 9:04:00 PM | Softball
LOS ANGELES—No. 3/3 UCLA defeated CSUN 22-0 in the 2022 softball season opener for both clubs Thursday night at Easton Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
11 UCLA hits resulted in a 13-run bottom of the first for the Bruins. After retiring the first six Matadors she faced, Holly Azevedo walked Alexis Garcia to begin the CSUN third. Azevedo struck out Vinessa Nunez before Mikayla Carman reached on an error. Alexis Lemus ground out allowed both runners to advance a base. Azevedo struck out Aaliyah Swan for the final out of the inning.
Â
UCLA added four runs in the bottom of the third. Kennedi Sorensen and Paloma Usquiano were both hit by Azevedo pitches in the fourth. Azevedo worked out of the jam, stranding the Matadors on first and second. The Bruins scored four in the bottom of the fourth as UCLA scored the most runs by a CSUN opponent since the Matadors moved to Division I in 1991.
Â
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Hats off to UCLA, they came out of the gate and capitalized on our mistakes and then got the big hits when they needed. Their pitching and defense played great, and we just didn't do our part."
Â
"I told the team there is a lot to learn from tonight. We have told them it's a marathon and not a sprint when it comes to the season. This was just one leg of the race and they each have a choice. Either stay behind or keep running the race."
Â
"It was good to get our young team a taste of what it is to compete at this level. We will always play a tough schedule and will get where we need to. We will make our adjustments and get prepared for Oregon tomorrow."
Â
THE NUMBERS
Azevedo no-hit the Matadors, marking the first time since Feb. 23, 2019, that CSUN did not record a hit in a game. Azevedo struck out eight and walked one.
Â
UCLA posted 19 hits. Delanie Wisz went 4-for-4 with four RBI to pace the Bruins. Maya Brady was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kinsley Washington was 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and four RBI.
Â
UP NEXT
CSUN hosts No. 17/18 Oregon (1-0) Friday afternoon in a doubleheader. Action on ESPN+ begins with noon with Darren Preston on the call.
