NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo opens the Big West Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday against No. 7 UC Irvine at noon. Live stats will be available for the match.
The Matadors are coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on Feb. 12-13. The Matadors picked up two top-25 victories over then ranked No. 19 San Diego State 11-10 and No. 23 Marist 13-10 during the event. CSUN would drop contests to a pair of Big West adversaries in sixth-ranked Hawai'i (18-3) and 16th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (17-9).
It was another impressive showing for a number of Matadors last week as newcomers Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal scored 11 and 10 goals, respectively, over the four matches. Kylee Jansen made her season debut at the event and would tally eight combined goals while freshman Shelby Hovanesian collected three goals. The Matador goalkeeping tandem of Piper McCulloch and Meghan Lopez registered a win apiece as McCulloch had 21 total saves and Lopez finished with 18.
Telek is off to a stellar start to her Matador career in 2022. The Hungarian native has 20 goals in 30 chances through six games this spring while she has posted five multiple-scoring performances and recorded at least a goal in each CSUN match. Telek also has nine assists to go along with her 20 goals for 29 points this season. Another Hungarian native, Pal has tallied 11 goals and nine assists thus far in her first season with the Matadors.
Lopez has a team-high 27 saves to go with a 12.36 GAA in front of the cage while McCulloch had 26 saves with a 12.31 GAA.
After dropping off the national polls for two weeks, the Matadors returned to the top-25 as voted on by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. CSUN was selected No. 24 this week after receiving votes over the past two weeks. CSUN was ranked as high as No. 23 this season on Jan. 26.
In the all-time series, UC Irvine has won 31 of 35 meetings with CSUN including the last 19 matches. CSUN's last win over the Anteaters came on April 2, 2010 in an 11-9 double overtime win at Matador Pool. The Anteaters won both meetings during the 2019 season, which included a 15-6 conference match win at CSUN.
A Closer Look at UC Irvine
The Anteaters are 8-3 to start the season and winners of three-straight games. UCI went 3-1 at the Triton Invitational, posting wins over Marist (14-5), Long Beach State (7-5) and UC Davis (9-6) with its only loss coming to Hawai'i (8-6) in overtime. On Thursday, the Anteaters notched their sixth top-25 win of the season with a 13-9 triumph over No. 18 Loyola Marymount.
Tara Prentice leads the Anteaters with 25 goals this season while Jessica Lynch has 17 goals and 11 assists. As a team, UCI averages 11.5 goals per game. On the defensive side, goalkeeper Faith Tedesco has a 7.45 GAA and 70 saves recorded.
