SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Kyle Hobus put down a team-high nine kills but CSUN dropped its 2022 Big West opener at No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in straight sets Thursday night at Robertson Gym.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 as the Gauchos improve to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. The loss drops the Matadors to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"I thought our serving and passing let us down a little bit tonight but Santa Barbara is a good team and they definitely affected us. I was pleased that we competed and fought hard and we'll make some adjustments and be ready to go at home tomorrow night."
SET 1
The Matadors trimmed an early 5-2 Gaucho lead to one (5-4) when UCSB was whistled for a setting error. A Krzmarzick kill kept CSUN within two at 10-8 before two straight Wilcox kills boosted the lead to four. A Wetter kill trimmed the deficit to three at 14-11 before the Matadors eventually whittled the UCSB lead to two (16-14) following another Hobus kill. Three straight  Gaucho points forced a timeout at 19-14 before a Griffin Walters kill pulled CSUN within four. The hosts then outscored the Matadors 6-3 down the stretch to seal the 25-18 win.
SET 2
After hitting .450 in set one, the Matadors had trouble replicating that figure the rest of the way hitting .231 in set two and .200 in set three. After a Hobus kill gave CSUN a 7-6 lead, the Gauchos claimed nine of the next 10 points while forcing a pair of Matador timeouts in the process. Trailing 15-8, a UCSB hitting error and another Krzmarzick kill pulled the Matadors within five at 15-10. CSUN was also within five at 18-13 and again at 20-15 before the Gauchos pulled away for the 25-17 win.

SET 3
Despite hitting .200 in the frame, the Matadors never trailed by more than two points until a 3-0 UCSB run opened up an 18-14 cushion. Kills from Krzmarzick and Inaki Bustamante were followed by a Gaucho hitting error which again pulled CSUN within two at 19-17. But a Wilcox kill fueled a set-clinching 6-0 run by the Gauchos who took the final set 25-17Â
