CSUB Edges CSUN 63-62 in OT in First Round Of Big West Tournament

FIRST HALF
Back-to-back three-pointers from Jasmine Dixon and Andie Easley keyed a 10-2 start for the Roadrunners. CSUB made 7-of-14 field goal attempts in the first quarter including four three-pointers allowing the 'Runners to lead 18-7 after 10 minutes.
Jayda Eggleston scored eight consecutive points at one point for CSUB as the Roadrunners took a 23-11 lead midway through the second quarter. Michelle Duchemin recorded four straight points to push the Matadors to a 6-0 spurt. The rally cut the Roadrunner advantage to 23-17, forcing CSUB to call timeout. CSUN cut it to 25-21 on a Meghann Henderson layup with just over a minute to play. Eggleston's free throws at the 34-second mark were the final score of the first half as the Roadrunners led 27-21 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
A Tess Amundsen three-pointer 25 seconds into the third quarter cut the CSUB lead in half. The Matadors went scoreless for the next three minutes as Roadrunners recorded six straight points. The media timeout came with 4:55 on the clock and saw the 'Runners leading 33-26.
Amundsen's second three-pointer of the quarter capped a 7-0 run and made it 32-31 with 1:48 to play. CSUB scored for the first time in over five minutes when Andie Easley's layup was good of an inbounds play. Anaiyah Tu'ua's putback at 37 seconds again created a 35-33 score which is how the quarter would end.
Amundsen's step-back three to begin the fourth quarter gave CSUN its first lead 36-35. Miracle Saxon returned the lead to the 'Runners with a three-pointer 1:14 into the period. A little over a minute later Jordyn Jackson's three-pointer put CSUN up 39-38. Vanessa Austin scored six points on an 8-0 CSUB run that resulted in a 47-39 game. Back-to-back three-pointers from Macy Smith and Amundsen cut it 47-45, but an Eggleston three-point play with 3:33 to go put CSUB up by five.
Kayanna Spriggs' jumper made it 50-47. Saxon committed an offensive foul which returned the possession to CSUN. Amundsen's jumper cut it to 50-49 at 1:55. Austin responded with a layup. The 'Runners called timeout, leading 52-49 with 90 seconds to play. Off a scramble play, Tu'ua tied the game with a three-pointer at the 1:00 mark.
Eggleson missed a jumper, but CSUB got the offensive rebound. Alexis Green missed a three-pointer, CSUN got the rebound and ran the clock down to 11 seconds when Spriggs came up short on a layup. The Roadrunners got the rebound and called timeout with 6.9 to go. With a foul to give, CSUN did so with 4.5 seconds remaining. CSUB called a timeout to advance the ball. The Roadrunners couldn't get a shot off, sending the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
Eggleson and Jackson traded three-pointers to begin the overtime session. Jackson sank a three-pointer with 2:41 on the clock for a 58-55 score. Austin made a pair of free throws 18 seconds later. Jackson missed a long jumper. CSUB grabbed the rebound and found Austin who missed a short jumper. The Matadors were awarded the rebound off a jump ball.
Eggleson and Amundsen exchanged baskets. With CSUN leading 60-59, Eggleston was fouled. The Big West's leading free throw shooting put CSUB ahead with two free throws with 43.5 seconds remaining. Jackson was fouled with 15.8 seconds as she drove to the basket. Jackson made the first to tie the game. She sank the second for a 62-61 advantage. CSUB called time out to advance the ball, setting the stage for Austin's game-winner. CSUN called a timeout to advance the ball. The Matadors could not get a shot up in time as CSUB took the victory.
THE NUMBERS
Eggleson led all scorers with 29 for the Roadrunners. She played all 45 minutes, shooting 10-of-19 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Austin recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Amundsen paced the Matadors with 24 points. The 6-1 forward added seven rebounds. Jackson scored 19 points, charted two assists, and two rebounds. CSUN outshot CSUB 37.5% (24-of-64) to 35.4% (23-of-65). The Matadors forced 15 'Runner turnovers. CSUN had 14 assists, compared to 12 for CSUB.

CSUN-CSUB was the first event played in The Dollar Loan Center as the facility opened formally to the public last week…2022 marked the 14th time CSUN took part in a postseason Big West Women's Basketball Tournament...the Matadors are 14-11 all-time and won the tournament three times, most recently in 2018.
