CSUN Travels to San Diego Tournament This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Softball team concludes a 20-game road trip this week when the Matadors (9-11) travel to the University of San Diego Tournament this weekend.

The tournament begins on Friday at 2:30 p.m. when the Matadors face Weber State. Friday's play concludes against the host Toreros at 5 p.m.

Weber State is 17-4 after defeating California Baptist 1-0 on Tuesday night. Wildcats' pitcher Arissa Henderson threw a one-hitter against the Lancers and is now 6-0 on the year.

Chloe Camarero is hitting .375 with eight home runs and 18 RBI. Her home run total has her ranked ninth in Division I entering this week's play. CSUN and Weber State are playing for the 11th time with the Wildcats leading the all-time series 6-4.

San Diego is 9-15 after defeating UC Riverside Wednesday night. Noelle Hee is leading the team in hitting (.353), home runs (2), and RBI (17). Courtney Rose is 4-3 in the circle, striking out a team-high 58 batters in 60.1 innings. Madison Earnshaw is 3-5, striking out 36 in 57.2 innings. CSUN and San Diego are playing for the 16th and 17th times with the Matadors leading the all-time series 10-5.

On Saturday, CSUN faces Weber State again at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the action at 2 p.m. against San Diego State. San Diego State is receiving votes this week in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25. The Aztecs are 13-9.

Maggie Balint was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for the third time this season. Balint went 2-0 last week with a 1.40 ERA for the Aztecs. Balint struck out 30 batters against just four walks in 20 innings. Balint is 6-3 with a 2.05 ERA, striking out 110 against 14 walks in 65 innings, limiting opponents to a .190 average. Balint ranks a tie for fifth in Division I in strikeouts (110). She is eighth in strikeouts per seven innings (11.8) and is 22nd in innings pitched (65.0).

CSUN defeated the Aztecs 6-4 on Feb. 18 as part of the Campbell/Cartier Classic. This will be the 60th time that CSUN and San Diego State are playing with the Matadors leading the all-time series 38-20-1.

The tournament concludes on Sunday at 10 against San Diego. The tournament will be streamed on the University of San Diego YouTube page with all links available on GoMatadors.com.

Alexis Martinez has been named Big West Softball Freshman of the Week for the second time, the league announced Mar. 7.

Martinez tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Matadors defeated California Baptist 2-0 on day one of the Amy S. Harrison Classic last Friday. Facing only one above the minimum, Martinez needed only 74 pitches to record her second shutout of the season. Martinez struck out two and issued the one walk.

Behind Martinez's three-hitter, CSUN defeated Sacred Heart 4-0 to conclude last Saturday's play at the tournament. Martinez needed 92 pitches (54 for strikes) to improve to 5-3 on the year. All three of her complete games in 2022 have been shutouts. She struck out three and walked three.

Martinez earned the honor previously on Feb. 21. Entering this week's action, Martinez is 5-3 and has struck out 26 in 45 innings. The Matadors were 2-3 during the Amy S. Harrison Classic.

Vinessa Nunez and Kennedi Sorensen were the top hitters for CSUN at the Amy S. Harrison Classic. Nunez posted a .429 batting average. Sorensen played every inning of the tournament, hitting .385 with two RBI.
