SAN DIEGO—CSUN opened play at the University of San Diego Tournament Friday afternoon at the Toreros Softball Complex. The Matadors went 1-1 on the day.
GAME 1
Kenedee Jamerson struck out a career-high nine as CSUN shutout Weber State 1-0 in the opener.
A two-out Kennedi Sorensen RBI single plated Sami Garcia in the top of the third to give the Matadors an early lead.
Weber State stranded a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third. CSUN did the same in the top of the fourth. A two-out CSUN error in the bottom of the fourth resulted in a pair of Wildcats' runners on first and second. Jamerson pitched out of the jam, as she got Faith Hoe to fly out to end the inning.
A CSUN error allowed McKell McCuistion to reach first to begin the Weber State seventh. Jamerson struck out Hoe before allowing her first walk of the game to pinch-hitter Mika Chong. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Jamerson would strike out Abigail Sagert looking for the second out. Mia Rushton ran the count to 2-2 before grounding out to second for the final out of the game.
Jamerson, a fifth-year graduate student, tossed a four-hitter. She broke her previous career-high of seven strikeouts which occurred last week against North Dakota State. Mariah Ramirez was the losing pitcher for Weber State (18-5). She threw a complete-game four-hitter.
GAME 2
San Diego defeated CSUN 9-7 in the nightcap.
The Matadors sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the first as CSUN jumped out to a 3-0. CSUN received RBI from Paloma Usquiano, Aaliyah Swan, and Sydney Freijanes during the rally. San Diego responded with nine runs in the bottom of the first. USD recorded six hits and sent the first eight batters to the plate before the Matadors recorded an out. 15 Toreros batted in the inning.
Jaymi Steward's double in the top of the second scored Alexis Lemus. Vinessa Nunez's sac fly in the top of the third drove in Swan to make it 9-5 in favor of San Diego. Mikayla Carman walked with two outs in the third and she came around to score on a Lemus double for a 9-6 game.
Carman led off the top of the sixth with an infield single. She stole second on the first pitch Lemus saw from Madison Earnshaw, the second USD pitcher of the game. Carman advanced to third when Lemus grounded out to shortstop. Steward drove Carman in with a single up the middle to reduce the USD advantage to 9-7.
Garcia, a pinch-hitter, led off the top of the seventh by working out a walk. Pinch-hitter Samantha Kwiatkowski grounded into a 1-6 fielder's choice. With Kwiatkowski on at first, Earnshaw struck out the next two CSUN batters to end the game.
Alexia Torculas went 4-for-5 with two runs for San Diego. AJ Kaiser was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ashley Daughtery, who started the game in the circle and gave up seven walks, drove in two runs at the plate. Earnshaw earned the victory with 4.1 innings of relief. She struck out five and allowed one walk. Steward registered two of the five CSUN hits. She also drove in two runs.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Kenedee threw a great first game and we did just enough to win. Game two got away from us early on. Kayla and Allie did a good job of keeping us in it and we had a chance to tie it up in the top of the seventh. I thought the offense did a good job of fighting back and getting the tying run at the plate. We must have a short-term memory and have a quick turnaround."

CSUN (10-12) faces Weber State again at 9 a.m. on Saturday before facing San Diego State (14-10) on day two of the San Diego Tournament.
