#24 CSUN Visits #10 UC Davis in Big West Match

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (12-11, 0-4 Big West) hits the road for the final time in the regular season as the Matadors visit No. 10 UC Davis in a Big West match on Saturday at noon. UC Davis will provide a video stream of the match.
The Matadors are coming off a 4-1 weekend where CSUN picked up wins over Ottawa (12-4), Claremont Mudd-Scripps (10-8), Pomona-Pitzer (11-10) and Whittier (8-7) before falling in overtime to No. 21 Brown (13-11). Three of the Matadors' four wins came on the road while CSUN posted its first home win of the season over Ottawa.
It would be a big week for sophomore center Dorottya Telek who netted 14 goals and totaled 21 points in the Matadors' five matches. For her efforts, Telek earned her first career Big West Player of the Week award on Wednesday. Telek also finished with seven assists, 10 steals and 12 exclusions drawn while shooting 48.3 percent from the field. She is the first Matador to be named the Big West Player of the Week this season and the first CSUN player overall since Katia Andon-Mateos in 2019.
Telek leads the Big West in scoring heading to the weekend with 67 goals and 94 points while she ranks third in assists (27). Anna Pal is second in the Big West in assists (31), fourth in points (69) and seventh in goals (38). Other top scorers on the team include Helena Sandhagen with 22 goals and Valeria Martinez with 15 goals.
In net, Meghan Lopez has started the last 12 matches for CSUN and has registered 165 saves overall on the season. Lopez, who also has eight points, hit a game-winning goal against Whittier to beat the fourth-quarter buzzer.
UC Davis leads CSUN 21-7 in the all-time series and has won seven in a row from the Matadors. The teams last played in 2020 with the Aggies prevailing in a neutral-site game, 9-7. The Matadors' last win over the Aggies took place on May 1, 2016, by a 10-9 score.
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The 10th-ranked Aggies (14-9, 1-1 Big West) posted wins last week over Azusa Pacific (14-2) and San Diego State (12-9) to stretch their win streak to three. UC Davis defeated UC San Diego on March 25 by a 9-5 margin for its first conference win of the season. The team has won three of four home matches in 2022.
Noelle Wijnbelt tops the Aggies with 46 goals on 53.5 percent shooting this season while Emily Aikema has a team-high 19 assists to go with 17 goals. Alyssa Lengtat is second on the team in goals with 23. In front of the cage, Sophia Noble has racked up 99 saves to go with an 8.22 goals-against-average.
