Matadors Fall to UC Davis in the Final Seconds
4/2/2022 6:19:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
DAVIS, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo gave No. 10 UC Davis a battle for 32 minutes but would lose in the final seconds by a 10-9 margin in a Big West match on Saturday at Schaal Aquatics Center. Dorottya Telek led the Matadors with five goals while Anna Pal chipped in with three tallies. Meghan Lopez racked up 15 saves in front of the cage.
The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after early goals from Noelle Wijnbelt and Emily Aikema. Telek shouldered the load offensively with two goals under the final three minutes of the first period but CSUN trailed 4-2 after eight minutes. Pal would open the scoring in the second quarter on a power play before Ryan Sund and Ashley Salem answered for the Aggies to stretch the lead to three goals. The Matadors though went into intermission with a late goal from Helena Sandhagen, pulling to within 6-4.
CSUN saw its biggest deficit of the match in the third period when Aikema and Allyson Clague hit the net to extend to an 8-4 advantage. The Matadors would battle back behind two Telek tallies before Pal beat the third quarter buzzer to pull CSUN to within 8-7.
After neither side could crack the net for nearly the first three minutes, Pal tied the game up with 5:24 remaining in regulation. CSUN would withstand a UC Davis power play in the final minutes as the score remained tied with under 60 seconds to play. UC Davis grabbed the lead right back with a goal from Alyssa Lengtat but the Matadors earned a penalty shot with 21 seconds to go. Telek took the penalty shot and found the net to even the match once more at 9-9. The Aggies though had one final possession and with two seconds remaining Aikema hit a go-ahead goal. Pal took a last second shot before the buzzer but her shot was off the mark.Â
CSUN Goals: Telek 5, Pal 3, Sandhagen
CSUN Saves: Lopez 15
GAME NOTES
Telek became the fifth Matador in team history to score at least 70 goals in a season on Saturday. She now stands at 72 goals on the year, which is tied for the sixth-most goals scored in a single season with Allison Brookes (2006).
Pal added three assists and four steals to her stat line while Telek drew nine exclusions. Lopez picked up an assist in addition to her 15 saves in net.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Really proud of our young team. They executed the game plan almost flawlessly and played the No. 10 team in the country to a buzzer beater. The Big West is a gauntlet of top ranked teams and today we showed we belong there."
