Matadors Drop Series Finale to UCSB
4/10/2022 4:25:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (15-14, 4-8 Big West) fell for the third-straight day to No. 24 UC Santa Barbara (21-8, 10-2 Big West) as the Gauchos prevailed 7-1 on Sunday at Matador Field. Ryan Wentz worked five-plus innings, allowing three runs. Andrew Sojka finished with two hits including a double in the game.
Â
Ryan Wentz blanked the high-powered Gaucho offense over the first two innings. In the first, UCSB picked up a pair of singles but Wentz escaped the inning unscathed. An inning later, Wentz went on to retire the Gauchos' side in order.
Â
The Gauchos though broke through in the third inning to jump ahead. Following a Jordan Sprinkle single and stolen base, Blake Klassen stroked a single to right-center field to plate the game's first run. Wentz would work out of further trouble by retiring two of the next three batters, leaving runners at the corners.
UCSB starter Ryan Gallagher frustrated CSUN's hitters throughout his eight innings of work and would get off to a strong start by retiring the first nine Matadors.
The Matadors though had their best scoring opportunity in the fourth inning against Gallagher. The first three CSUN hitters reached to start the inning as Luke Powell was hit by a pitch, Sojka doubled and Kai Moody worked a walk. Gallagher picked up a key strikeout of Gabe Gonzalez before throwing a wild pitch to bring home the tying run. However, CSUN settled for just one run after Gallagher struck out Bart West and forced Sebastian Garcia to fly out.
CSUN again looked to get back into the scoring column in the sixth when Sojka reached on a two-out single with Powell at first base. Powell though tried to take third base on the play and was thrown out to end the inning.
UCSB broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three times on one hit. Wentz began the inning but gave up a walk and hit another batter before exiting the mound. Right-hander Lucas Braun retired the next UCSB batter but Sprinkle followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Gauchos back on top. Moments later, Klassen delivered the big blow of the inning, a two-run homer to give the Gauchos a 4-1 lead.
Braun bounced back with a scoreless seventh inning, stranding three runners on base but the Gauchos broke the game open in an inning later with a three-run frame. Klassen homered for the second time in the eighth before the Gauchos added another run on a dropped flyball in left field. John Newman Jr. drove in the Gauchos' seventh run on a fielder's choice.
Gallagher blanked the Matadors over four consecutive innings after the fourth as he picked up double plays in the seventh and the eighth.

GAME NOTES
Sojka recorded his 11th multiple-hit game of the season, tying Moody for the team lead. Sojka also extended his on-base streak to a season-high 12 games.
On the mound, Xavier Martinez worked an inning in relief, allowing an unearned run while Chad Wilson recorded the final two outs of the ninth.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"We didn't play representative of how we played the last few weekends. I don't know where it crept in. I know the Sunday loss at UC Irvine really knocked us to our knees. We had an opportunity to sweep a really good program on their home field and we let it get away. It's almost like we didn't recover from that. I know it's a building process still, I'm aware where we're at as a program. There were some things uncharacteristic of what we've done. It all starts on the mound, obviously. We didn't get performances like we needed to but then we didn't take care of the baseball. That is a championship program right there we played. I have a lot of respect for that program and what they've done in the Big West over the last few years. But to beat teams like that, to be in games like that, when you get sacrifice flies you've got to throw a guy out at the plate. In yesterday's game, you've got to catch the ball at home plate. You can't drop flyballs in the outfield."
"We've have an opportunity Tuesday [to bounce back]. We've got USC coming in, a team from the Pac-12. It's about working to get better. There's not a person in this organization including myself and my coaching staff that can't get better. That's what my emphasis is going to be."
