FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (15-14) returns to non-conference action with a midweek game against USC on Tuesday at Matador Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. with Ghizal Hasan and Shotgun Spratling on the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio.
Probable Pitching Matchup
USC at CSUN
RHP Ethan Reed (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. RHP Blake Sodersten (3-3, 6.25 ERA)
The Matadors will face the Trojans for the 81st time in baseball on Tuesday. USC leads the all-time series 54-25-1, however, the teams have only played six times over the past 13 seasons. The squads last met during the 2018 season at Dedeaux Field where the Matadors won two of three games over a weekend series. CSUN has not hosted USC since the 2013 season when the Trojans won 6-5 in 10 innings. The Matadors have gone 14-17-1 all-time against USC at Matador Field.
CSUN is looking to bounce back from a three-game sweep at the hands of nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara this past weekend at Matador Field. The Matadors led by as many as four runs in the series opener but the Gauchos rallied back for a 13-10 win on Friday. A day later, CSUN trailed by seven runs to UCSB before the cutting the deficit to one run late in the game, however, the Gauchos held on for a 9-7 triumph. UCSB completed the sweep with a wire-to-wire 7-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the three losses, Andrew Sojka had a solid series against the Gauchos by hitting .545 (6-for-11) with a home run and two RBI. Joey Kramer and Gabe Gonzalez also homered in the series. Freshman Diego Gutierrez had perhaps the best pitching performance of the week in game two when he tossed six innings, allowing two runs in relief.
Graduate outfielder Bart West will renew acquaintances with a familiar team on Tuesday when the Matadors host USC. West, who transferred to CSUN this year, spent the past four seasons with the Trojans from 2018-21 where he competed in 40 games and made 15 starts. He would collect 14 hits over his time with the Trojans before graduating in 2021. West has enjoyed a career season thus far with the Matadors in 2022, producing a .330 average at the plate with five home runs, six stolen bases, 16 runs scored and 18 RBI.
Sojka leads the Matadors in batting average heading to the week at a .345 clip while he also tops the team in hits (38) and runs (18) to go with 18 RBI. Gonzalez remains the Big West leader in home runs with nine while he sports a team-high 27 RBI, 18 walks and a .622 slugging percentage. Kai Moody is second on the team in runs (26) and RBI (21) and third in home runs (4).
Blake Sodersten is scheduled to make the Tuesday start for the Matadors. Sodersten holds a 3-3 record with a 6.25 ERA in eight starts this season. He leads the team in innings pitched (44.2) while he ranks second in strikeouts (36). His start on Tuesday would be his 37th career start as a Matador, which would place him in sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time career game started list. Sodersten is currently tied with Jim Walker (1983-84) on the list at 36 starts.
A Closer Look at USC
The Trojans come in with a 17-12 record and 4-8 mark in Pac-12 play. USC has lost four in row after suffering a three-game sweep to fifth-ranked Oregon State at Dedeaux Field. The team has a 4-3 record away from home this season. Head coach Jason Gill is in his third season leading the Trojans.
Adrian Colon-Rosado tops the Trojans with a .390 batting average to go with a .466 on-base percentage and a .600 slugging percentage. Colon-Rosado shares the team lead with Garret Guillemette in home runs (5) and RBI (20). Tyresse Turner is second on the team in batting average at the .318 clip while posting nine stolen bases and 21 runs scored. Right-hander Ethan Reed will start Tuesday against CSUN as he holds a 5.40 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
