CSUN Falls to Long Beach State in Regular Season Finale
4/16/2022 1:56:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (12-13, 0-6 Big West) played No. 10 Long Beach State (14-13, 3-3 Big West) even through the first two quarters before the Beach pulled away in the second half for a 17-9 victory on Saturday at Matador Pool. Anna Pal and Helena Sandhagen scored three goals apiece while Dorottya Telek chipped in with two. Meghan Lopez picked up eight saves in front of the cage.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle with neither side able to find the back of the net for over four minutes. Elena Kotanchyan would crack the scoring column for Long Beach State with 3:56 on the clock before Amanda Price doubled the lead on a power play near the two-minute mark. CSUN could not capitalized on two LBSU exclusions in the opening period but Telek would dent the twine on an even possession. However, Orsi Hertska gave the Beach a 3-1 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Hertska extended the Long Beach State lead to 4-1 with an early goal to start the second quarter but the Matadors fought back in the game starting with a goal from Tatum Scarry. Sandhagen then brought the Matadors to within one, scoring on a power play. Gabriella Matafora-Adams gave the Beach some breathing room with a tally at the five-minute mark. The Matadors though took control over the final five minutes as Sandhagen and Pal scored back-to-back goals to tie the match. After Kotanchyan gave the Beach the lead once more, Sandhagen completed the hat trick with a game-tying goal with 27 seconds on the clock.
The score remained deadlocked at 6-6 until Marilia Mimides scored for the Beach. CSUN would have an answer 46 seconds later when Telek tied the game again at 7-7. CSUN had an opportunity to take the lead with three minutes to play in the third after earning an excluision but could not take advantage. Instead, Long Beach State grabbed the lead on a Mariah Walker tally. Seconds later, Nicole Thomas was charged with an exclusion resulting in a penalty shot that Hertska scored for a two-goal Beach lead. Mimides picked up another goal with 14 seconds on the clock that quickly put Long Beach State ahead 10-7.
It would be all Long Beach State in the fourth period as Mimides netted four of her team's seven goals. Pal collected two goals for CSUN in the final stanza but it would not be enough to overcome the Beach's lead down the stretch.
CSUN Goals: Pal 3, Sandhagen 3, Telek 2, Scarry
CSUN Saves: Lopez 8
GAME NOTES
With her two goals, Telek has now scored 74 goals on the season. Her season tally is tied with Chari Christopher (2005) and Madeleine Sanchez (2017) for the third-most goals scored in a single season in team history.
Pal had two assists while Telek, Scarry, Lacey Hall and Valeria Martinez each had one assist apiece. Telek also had five drawn exclusions.
