Hawai'i Defeats CSUN 5-2 in Regular Season Finale

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i defeated CSUN 5-2 in the women's tennis regular-season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex.
DOUBLES
Tai Talya Zandberg and Gitte Heynemans defeated Ekaterina Repina and Sasha Turchak 6-1 in the No. 2 match to begin the day. The Rainbow Wahine clinched the point when Nidhi Surapaneni and Ana Vilcek defeated Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibañez Luna 6-4 at No. 3. Satsuki Takamura and Lea Romain led the No. 1 match versus Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso 5-4 when play was halted.
SINGLES
The singles play featured three three-set matches; with the remaining matches having at least one set go to a tiebreaker. Repina handed Takamura a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) defeat at No. 1 to open the singles portion of the dual.
"Today was my last time playing on the CSUN courts with my team," Repina said. "I tried to enjoy every second of it and played a great match. I appreciate everyone who was there for me all these years and I am wishing for more CSUN wins in the future."
Anna Kern and Santibañez Luna to a tiebreaker in the first set at No. 6, which Kern won 7-3. She took the match 7-5 in the second set.
Fraile Toboso and Vilcek opened the No. 2 singles match with a tiebreaker that saw Fraile Toboso win 7-4. To tie the overall score at two, Fraile Toboso took the second set by a 6-4 count.
"I'm so happy that I could have a great final set of matches at CSUN," said Fraile Toboso. "Time has passed so fast and I am so grateful to be a part of this family. I want to thank our coaches for the opportunity they gave me. I love all of my teammates that I have had throughout the years, I love them, and I have learned so much from them."
Surapaneni began the No. 5 match against Dorian by winning the first set 6-2. Dorian took the second set 6-2. Surapaneni won the match in the third 6-4. Heynemans secured the dual victory at No. 4. Heynemans dropped the first set to Magdalena Hedrzak 6-2 before winning the next two by 6-4 scores. Zandberg won the final match of the day at No. 3. Turchak won the first set 6-4. Zandberg won 6-4 in the second. The third set went to Zandberg by a 7-5 score.

UP NEXT
CSUN (8-8, 4-5 Big West) finished the regular season in a tie for sixth in the Big West with Long Beach State (4-5 BWC, 9-10 overall). However, the Matadors hold the tiebreaker for the sixth seed (head-to-head), and as a result, CSUN will face Hawai'i (11-7, 7-2 Big West) in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament. The Rainbow Wahine will be the third seed. The dual is set for Thursday afternoon at 12 p.m. in San Diego at the Barnes Tennis Complex.
