CSUN Enters San Diego State Fall Classic This Weekend

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN returns to women's tennis action this week as the Matadors compete in the San Diego State Fall Classic I.

The tournament is scheduled to run from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2 at SDSU's Aztec Tennis Center. Scheduled to compete are Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Long Beach State, San Diego State, and UTEP.

CSUN opened the Fall women's tennis schedule on Sept. 17 at the Pomona-Pizer/Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Invitational Duals.

Morning play consisted of four doubles matches against Pomona-Pitzer Picking up victories at No. 3 were Angela Ho and Emma Moratalla Sanz and Yuliia Zhytelna and Vitoria Solis at No. 4. A fifth doubles match was played against a team from Concordia-Irvine with the CSUN duo of Tallia Harper and Sofia Dermenjyan picking up a 6-2 victory.

The afternoon session was comprised of CSUN taking part in 11 singles matches against players from Westmont, Biola, and Azusa Pacific. The Matadors went 11-0, winning all the matches in straight sets.

The day concluded with evening doubles play against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. CMS, the 2022 NCAA Division III National Champions, defeated CSUN in three of five doubles matches. Taking victories for the Matadors were Zhytelna and Victoria Santibañez Luna (No. 2, 7-5) and Ho and Moratalla Sanz (No. 3, 6-3). Turchak and Ung fell 7-5 to Devon Wolf and Alisha Chuloni at No. 1 doubles.  Â

CSUN began the final day of competition with a set of singles matches against Pomona-Pitzer.

After splitting the first two sets, Turchak went to a third-set tiebreaker against the 2022 Division III national runner-up, Annie Zhou, and came away with a 10-3 victory to clinch the win. Pomona-Pitzer won the No. 2 singles before CSUN won the remaining six singles matches, all in straight sets.

The middle session saw the Matadors sweep three doubles matches against Biola. Turchak and Cindy Ung defeated Colbeyshae Emery and Alexandra Mann, 6-4 at No. 1. Ho and Solis handed Brooke Fager and Charlie Croteau a 6-2 defeat at No. 2. Zhytelna and Moratalla Sanz defeated Gabby Carvajal and Carly Chan 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.

The final singles session was against Claremont-Mudd Scripps, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, featured five matches going to a third-set tiebreaker. Audrey Yoon defeated Turchak 6-7, 6-4, 10-3 at No. 1. Zhyelna dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 decision to Sena Selba in the No. 2 match. Ella Brissett and Santibañez Luna split the first two sets at No. 3 before Brissett won 17-15 in the third set tiebreak to take the match. Kate Wurster defeated Harper 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 in the third set tiebreak.

Moratalla Sanz came back from a set down and won her third set tiebreaker against Lindsey Eiseman 10-5 to secure the victory at No. 4 singles. CMS won the remaining two matches of the session.
