NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Trailing by 16 in the third quarter, CSUN mounted a furious comeback that just came up short against Big West leader UC Irvine Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena, as the Anteaters were able to edge the Matadors 54-52.
The first quarter featured three separate runs. The Anteaters jumped to a 6-2 start before the Matadors scored the next five. UCI scored nine consecutive points out of the media timeout at the 4:10 mark. A Jordyn Jackson three-pointer in the final minute proved to be the final points of the quarter as the 'Eaters led 16-10.
Nikki Tom scored nine of her 11 first half points in the second quarter combined with a 9-for-9 performance from the free throw line in the second; the Anteaters jumped out to a 37-23 at halftime. Deja Lee's fastbreak layup, 22 seconds into the second half, pushed UCI to its largest lead of the game.
Trailing 43-27, CSUN began to chip away. A Jackson three-pointer capped off a 7-0 spurt to cut it to a 43-34 game. After a Tom jumper, the Matadors went to the free throw line for the first time in the game at the 1:52 mark of the third, when Ana Carolina De Jesus made 1-of-2 attempts. Kayanna Spriggs sank a pair of free throws a little over a minute later before Nevaeh Parkinson's bucket closed the period with the score 47-36.
Jackson and Hunter Hernandez traded three-pointers to begin the final stanza. Jackson's second three-pointer created a 49-42 game as CSUN called a timeout. Tom's jumper after a CSUN miss increased the Anteaters' lead to nine. A Jackson layup followed Tess Amundsen's fast break layup. Amundsen cut it to 51-48 at 2:22 when she put back a Jackson miss.
Both teams committed offensive turnovers before Hernandez was sent to the free throw line a little under a minute later. Hernandez connected on both attempts to return to a five-point UCI advantage. Hernandez fouled Jackson on the ensuing CSUN possession. The Matador guard made both attempts to make it again a one-possession game. Lee was fouled on the next UC Irvine possession but missed both shots. A scramble ensued on the rebound attempt.
Anaiyah Tu'ua made a steal and went the distance for a layup and a one-point game with 36 seconds remaining. The Anteaters called timeout. UC Irvine worked the clock to 10 seconds when Hernandez missed a jumper. She grabbed her rebound and called timeout. Parkinson was fouled out of the timeout. She made 1-of-2 free throw attempts as CSUN called timeout. The Matadors advanced the ball to halfcourt. CSUN could not get a shot off in the final seconds as the horn sounded in favor of the Anteaters.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"I have to give our kids credit. We dug ourselves a big hole and played our butts off to get back into the game. I (place the blame) on me on the last play. It shouldn't come down to that, but I could have put us in a better position than we had. We are giving ourselves a chance to win, but unfortunately, the free throw discrepancy has been a factor in many of our games. Jordyn is a warrior when she steps out on the floor who gives us a 100-percent effort every time she steps on the floor. There is no better representative of our program than Jordyn, and I am privileged to coach her."
