CSUN Visits UCSD, Hosts UC Irvine on Senior Night

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--CSUN Women's Soccer enters the home stretch of the regular season this week. The Matadors visit UC San Diego on Thursday night at 7 p.m. before returning home for a Sunday afternoon meeting with UC Irvine on Senior Day at 2 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAST WEEK'S GAMES
CSUN's dropped a pair of road matches last week to slip to 1-4-2 in Big West play. The Matadors fell in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday night at UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, with the Gauchos breaking a scoreless tie on a costly penalty kick in the 88th minute. Last Sunday, CSUN kept first-place Cal Poly off the scoreboard for 30-plus minutes before the Mustang offense came alive in an eventual 4-0 decision. Hayden Mauldin would have a career-high 11 saves against Cal Poly.
SENIOR SALUTE
CSUN will honor a six-member senior class after Sunday's match with UC Irvine. A defensive stalwart, Kacie Garrity has lettered four seasons with CSUN and played in the most matches of any current player with 73 to go with two goals, seven assists and 11 points. Forward Ashley Cruz, who set a school record by returning for a seventh season, has played in 62 games and recorded two goals, four assists and 16 points. Another forward, Izabel Reyes has led the team with three goals and eight points this season while competing in 48 games and posting 10 points. In the midfield, Brooke Mobeck has played in 47 career games with CSUN, registering three goals and seven points. On defense, Erin Anderson has seen action in 46 career games, posting one goal, two assists and four points while Sami Alarcon has battled through injury to play in 27 games to go with a goal since 2019.
POSTSEASON RACE
CSUN's (five points) postseason chances took a hit last week but the Matadors are still alive for a Big West Championship berth with three matches left. The Matadors are four points back of the sixth and final postseason spot, occupied by Cal State Bakersfield (3-8-4, 2-3-3) and UC Irvine (5-6-4, 2-2-3). CSUN is looking to return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2019, when the Matadors advanced to the championship game.
BIG WEST LEADERBOARDS
In goal, sophomore Hayden Mauldin has moved atop The Big West leaderboard in the saves department with 89. Mauldin is also first in the conference in saves per game (5.56), fourth in shutouts (3) and fifth in save percentage (.754). CSUN's leading goal scorer Izabel Reyes is 12th in The Big West in shots in goal while ranking 16th in goals (3) and 18th in points (8).
SCOUTING UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons hold an overall 3-8-4 record with a 2-3-2 conference mark. UCSD is not eligible for the postseason this year as the team is in its final season of reclassifying into a Division I team. In last week's action, the Tritons played to a scoreless draw with UC Irvine before falling at Long Beach State 2-1. UCSD has gone 2-3-1 at home on the year. Raquel Kalpakoff is sixth in The Big West in goals with five to go with 11 points while Kennedy Carter has hit the net three times. Keara Fitzgerald has played every minute in net, posting a 1.73 GAA with 83 saves and three shutouts.
CSUN is seeking its first-ever win over UC San Diego. The Tritons are a perfect 3-0 over the Matadors since joining The Big West. Last season, UCSD prevailed 1-0 at CSUN with the game-winning score coming in the 80th minute.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
The Anteaters come in with a 5-6-4 overall record and 2-2-3 league mark. A season ago, UCI would win the Big West Championship before eventually advancing through to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. In last week's action, UCI and UCSD played to a scoreless draw while the Anteaters won 2-0 over UC Riverside. UCI has posted a 1-3-2 record in road games. Alyssa Moore enters the week third in The Big West in goals with six and fourth in points with 15 while Desiree Mendoza and Tati Fung are tied for third place in assists (4). In goal, Glo Hinojosa is second in The Big West in shutouts with five to go with a 1.36 GAA and 45 saves.
UCI holds a narrow 12-11-4 edge over CSUN in the all-time series with wins in four consecutive matches. The Anteaters swept the season series in 2022, winning 2-1 at CSUN and 1-0 in Irvine.Â
