
CSUN Set to Host 2023 Cullum Invitational at The Saticoy Club

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN men's golf is set to host the 27th annual Bill Cullum Invitational beginning Monday (Oct. 9) at The Saticoy Club in Somis (Ventura County). The event will span two days and 54 holes of stroke play.
Team scores will consist of the cumulative total of its four best scores out of five per round. The tournament kicks off with a practice round on Sunday, Oct. 8 and will be followed by 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 9 and a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
The Tournament
2023 marks a return to Ventura County for The Cullum which will be held at The Saticoy Club in Somis for the first time. After 24 years at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley (1996-2019), The Cullum moved to The Oaks Club at Valencia in 2021 and 2022.
This year's field features 14Â teams and 81Â players who will battle The Saticoy Club course which will be a par 72, 7,008-yard layout.Â
The 14-team tournament field is comprised of Cal State Fullerton, CSU San Bernardino, Hawai'i, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Stanislaus State, Temple, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, Utah State, Weber State and the host Matadors.
The Saticoy Club is the premier private country club in Ventura County. Quietly nestled in the hillsides of Somis, The Saticoy Club is considered one of the area's best kept golf secrets. The club has been host to many U.S.G.A. Championship Qualifiers and SCGA Amateur Championships.
The History
The 27-year old tournament recently changed its name to the "The Bill Cullum Invitational" after the legendary CSUN Men's Golf coach.
In previous years, the tournament has been called "The Countrywide Invitational" and in 2006 was renamed "The Bill Cullum/Countrywide Invitational." Bill Cullum coached the Matador men's team from 1965 to 1986 and won three NCAA Division II golf championships and finished second twice. He was named NCAA College-Division Coach of the Year in 1969 and District Eight Coach of the Year in 1970 and 1971.
Under Cullum, the Matadors won eight California Collegiate Athletic Association championships from 1969 to 1977. Cullum was inducted to the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 1989 and the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. He passed away on July 12, 2003. Current CSUN men's golf coach Jim Bracken played under Cullum from 1978-80.

CSUN won its second consecutive team championship in 2022 - third overall - while the Matadors' Felix Schrott defeated UC Irvine's Darien Zhao in a one-hole playoff to win the 2022Â Individual title with a score of 6-under 210.Â
The FieldThe 14-team tournament field is comprised of Cal State Fullerton, CSU San Bernardino, Hawai'i, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Stanislaus State, Temple, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, Utah State, Weber State and the host Matadors.
Each school will field a team of five players with Cal State Fullerton, North Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC San Diego, and CSUNÂ fielding individuals whose score will not count towards team scoring. A total of 81 players are scheduled to compete. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
