2/15/2023 9:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Davis defeated CSUN 71-50 in Big West women's basketball action Wednesday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The Matadors held the Aggies to 31.3% (5-of-16) shooting in the first quarter and led 17-14 after 10 minutes. A 5-0 burst pushed CSUN to a 22-16 lead. UC Davis responded with five in a row of their own to cut it to one.
Leading 27-24, a Macy Smith three-pointer, followed by a pair of Anaiyah Tu'ua free throws, earned the Matadors their largest game lead at the 4:24 mark. UC Davis chipped away, keeping the CSUN lead in the three-to-five-point range. Jordyn Jackson increased the lead to 36-31 with 1:40 to play in the first half. The Aggies posted the final five of the second to trail by one at halftime.
The second half was all UC Davis. The Aggies outscored the Matadors 36-14 in the final 20 minutes. UC Davis mounted a 20-4 run at one point to seize control of the game. The Aggies made 14-of-32 field goal attempts in the second half while holding CSUN to 5-of-23 shooting in the final 20 minutes to go onto victory.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"UC Davis is bigger a team, and between their ability to post one through five and their offensive rebounding capability, you can give up a second chance opportunity. They used that second chance opportunity to kick the ball out and make threes, which was happening a lot in the third and fourth quarters. Jordyn is carrying the load and doing her job, but we didn't have anyone else score double figures. So that puts a lot of pressure on her, and she must work hard to get her shots."
THE STATS
The Aggies shot 43.1% (28-of-65) in the game, while the Matadors made 37.7% of their field goal attempts (20-of-53). UC Davis was 9-of-30 from three-point range, while CSUN was 4-of-9. Only 24 fouls were called (15 for the Matadors, nine for the Aggies). UC Davis went 6-of-9 from the free throw line, while CSUN was 6-of-8.
The Aggies outscored CSUN 38-12 in the paint. UC Davis outrebounded CSUN 44-30, 16-7 on the offensive glass. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers (12 for the Matadors, 12 for the Aggies). Each club made seven steals.
Tova Sabel was 10-of-19 from the floor as she scored a game-high 23 points. Tess Sussman charted 17 for UC Davis. Jackson led the Matadors with 16 points.
