Matadors Make the Midweek Trip to San Diego State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (3-0) hits the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when it visits San Diego State at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.

LAST WEEK'S SERIES
CSUN opened the 2023 season with a series sweep of Stony Brook at Matador Field. The Matadors' offense was the story of the series as CSUN outscored the Seawolves 42-11 over the three games.
In the opener, CSUN received grand slams from Graysen Tarlow and Ali Camarillo in a 20-5 rout on Friday. CSUN would score seven times in two different frames in the game while also posting a five-run frame. The Matadors clinched the series with a 14-4 win on Saturday, highlighted by a pair of home runs from Joey Kramer and Jakob Simons and a solid seven-inning performance from Thomas Bainton, who allowed four runs. CSUN secured a series sweep on Sunday with an 8-2 triumph, coming back from an early 2-0 deficit to eventually score six times over its last three at-bats.
CSUN's 20-run game in the opener was its most runs in a game since 2019. The Matadors outhit the Seawolves 45-24 over the three games while Matador hitters posted a combined 14 multiple-hit performances. On the pitching side, seven CSUN relief pitchers combined to toss nine shutouts innings. Xavier Martinez was the standout of the bullpen, tossing three perfect innings in the finale to pick up the win.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Sophomore catcher Graysen Tarlow took home the first Big West Field Player of the Week award of the season on Feb. 20. Tarlow slashed .636/.667/1.000 in the three games, tallying nine RBI, seven hits, five runs scored and two stolen bases. He would go 5-for-5 in the opener with six RBI including a grand slam. His five hits were the most by a CSUN hitter since Nate Ring accomplished the feat on March 26, 2013. Tarlow also hit a go-ahead pinch-hit two-run single in the series finale.
Shortstop Ali Camarillo had another standout performance in the opener of the Stony Brook series, driving in a career-high five RBI with a homer. Emanuel Dean, a transfer from UCLA, went 5-for-10 at the plate in the series with four doubles and three RBI. Jakob Simons also hit the ball well in the three games, batting .462 (6-for-13) with six runs scored and five RBI.
One of seven relief pitcher to appear over the weekend, Hayden Cody made his return to the field after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Cody, who last played in 2021, retired all three batters he faced in game two of the series.
Ryan Wentz also made his return to the mound after missing the tail-end of the Big West season in 2022. Wentz worked five innings in the finale, allowing two runs to go with five strikeouts.
SERIES HISTORY
San Diego State leads CSUN 47-41 in the all-time series, dating back to the 1960 season. After dropping three-straight meetings from 2015-19, CSUN knocked off San Diego State 9-2 at Tony Gwynn Stadium last season with Kevin Fitzer driving in four runs in the win. The Aztecs are 29-17 overall at home against the Matadors.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs went 0-3 last weekend, falling three times at Arizona State. Despite the sweep, SDSU lost two one-run games and was outscored by just a 12-8 margin. Last season, SDSU finished 18-38 overall and 10-20 in the Mountain West. Prior to the season, the Aztecs were picked to finish third in the league. Head coach Mark Martinez enters his ninth season leading the program.
Outfielder Cole Carrigg was placed on the Preseason All-Mountain West Team after batting .388 last season with three homers and 40 RBI to go with 19 stolen bases. Carrigg hit .357 (5-for-14) in last weekend's ASU series. Catcher Poncho Ruiz batted .309 a season ago with 43 runs scored, 33 RBI and five homers. Right-handed pitcher Robert Brodell earns the start against CSUN on Tuesday after appearing in one game last weekend where he tossed 2.1 shutout innings.
