CSUN Notches First Road Win of the Season at San Diego State

CSUN would manufacture four runs on just one hit in the first to jump on the Aztecs. Simons kicked off the inning with a single before Graysen Tarlow was hit by a pitch and Andrew Sojka drew a walk. Dean brought in a run on a fielder's choice and Kramer added another on a groundout. Three more walks forced in another run followed by another hit by pitch for a CSUN 4-0 lead.

An inning later, Sojka legged out a one-out triple on a drive to left field, setting up another Matador scoring chance. Dean followed with a double to left field that reached the wall then Kramer hit an RBI single through the left side to extend the lead to 6-0.
Earning the Tuesday start, Kenji Pallares collected a double play in a clean first inning but the Aztecs tagged the right hander with a three-run second inning. San Diego State pulled a run closer in the third on a solo home run from TJ Fondtain. The damage in the third could have been worse as Tarlow and Kamau Neighbors would team up to tag out Cole Carrigg attempting to steal second base earlier in the frame.
After the Fondtain homer, Pallares would settle down on the mound and retire the next seven Aztec hitters. He also struck out four of his five batters on the night during that stretch.
With lead still at 6-4, Simons gave the Matadors more breathing room with a towering homer to left field to start off the sixth inning.
Ontiveros entered out of the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and gave the team a big lift on the mound. The southpaw struck out two of three in the sixth and added another punch out in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
After another Ontiveros strikeout to start the eighth, Irvin Weems reached on an infield single. Battling through slick, wet conditions on the field, CSUN committed an error on the play as Weems eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
In the ninth, Ontiveros retired the first two batters of the frame before giving up an infield single to Shaun Montoya. However, the sophomore sat down Maddox Haley on a liner that was snared by Kramer for the last out.

GAME NOTES
Jakob Simons has now collected two hits in all four games this season. He has also homered in two of the last three games. Shunsuke Sakaino reached base three times in the game, posting two walks and a hit.
Isaac Ontiveros' four innings of work and five strikeouts are new career highs for the sophomore. Kenji Pallares earned his first career win in his CSUN debut by tossing five innings and allowing four runs to go with five strikeouts. While surrendering its first run of the season on Tuesday, CSUN's bullpen has still not allowed an earned run in 13 combined innings.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"I was proud of the guys' discipline and we're going to talk about that word all year long. As long as we maintain our discipline, I think it's going to be tough for teams to get through our lineup.
I couldn't be more proud of both of our pitchers. It's not always going to go smooth. I think everybody in the dugout noticed how Kenji was able to get it together and get into a groove. That can't go unnoticed. The job that our bullpen has been able to do so far has been exceptional. It's a long season and it's not going to be like that forever but I just like how the guys battle and compete for each other. They root each other on. It was clear that Isaac was tired later on in the game and everyone was pulling for him. It was a good team win."
