RIVERSIDE, Calif.—A 13-4 run to start the fourth quarter powered CSUN past UC Riverside in Big West women's basketball action Monday afternoon at SRC Arena.
FIRST HALF
Jordan Webster scored five of the first seven UC Riverside points to propel the Highlanders to a 7-2 start. De'jah Williams and Kayanna Spriggs recorded back-to-back field goals to break a 3+ minute scoring drought for the Matadors as CSUN trailed 9-6 at the first quarter media timeout.
The Matadors made four of their next field goal attempts out of the media to go up 12-11. The Highlanders scored the next four. Rochelle Fourie's layup shortly before the end of the period created a 15-14 score after 10 minutes.
Michelle Duchemin tied the score at 17 with a three-pointer 47 seconds into the frame. The teams went scoreless over the next three minutes until Matheya Bryant's layup returned the lead to UCR. Arina Nikishina made a layup at 4:50 that broke a nearly five-minute scoreless stretch for CSUN, tying the score at 19.
Bryant's free throws out of the media timeout midway through the second once again put UC Riverside into the lead. Despite the Matadors holding the Highlanders to 2-of-16 shooting in the second, UC Riverside made all six free throw attempts in the final four minutes to lead 25-20 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Spriggs scored the first five points of the third quarter as the Matadors closed to 28-25 four minutes into the period. The CSUN defense allowed only three field goals in the third, but the Highlanders met the challenge and allowed three CSUN field goals in the final five minutes, allowing UCR to lead 35-30 after 30 minutes.
Macy Smith and Duchemin charted back-to-back field goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter, cutting the UCR advantage to 35-34. Trailing 37-34, Anaiyah Tu'ua tied the score with a three-pointer at 8:02. CSUN forced a turnover on the ensuing UC Riverside possession, leading to a Smith transition basket and the first Matadors' lead since the first quarter.
The Highlanders called a timeout which resulted in a Duchemin basket. CSUN got a defensive stop, which led to a Duchemin drive and a six-point advantage. The teams exchanged missed baskets before Anna Blount's layup at 5:06, reducing the CSUN lead to 43-39.
Ana Carolina De Jesus charted an offensive rebound, and her putback out of the timeout extended the lead to six again. UC Riverside switched to a press, forcing a turnover. Webster's three-pointer made it a 45-42 game. Spriggs drew a foul on the next CSUN possession. The 6-2 forward made the first free throw attempt but missed the second, keeping it at 46-42.
Zoe Tillery's drive resulted in a layup for a two-point game with 2:13 to play. However, the Matadors committed a turnover on the next offensive chance. Webster was whistled for an offensive foul, giving CSUN the ball with 71 seconds remaining.
UC Riverside forced Tu'ua to miss a drive and called timeout with the ball with 40.7 seconds to go. The Highlanders worked the clock down to 26.5 seconds when Spriggs made a steal on a Tillery turnover. The Matadors called timeout a little under four seconds later. CSUN committed a turnover on the inbounds pass. UCR called their final timeout as two seconds came off the clock.
With two fouls to give, the Matadors fouled four seconds later. Three seconds came off the clock as CSUN fouled for the fourth time. UCR inbounded with Blount driving to the lane. She missed the layup. Smith grabbed the rebound and called timeout at the 7.9-second mark.
The Matadors inbounded the ball to Smith, who was fouled at 6.4. The fifth UCR team foul sent Smith to the line, where she made both free throw attempts. However, Blount missed a jumper at the buzzer for the final 48-44 score.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"We played many different lineups to keep ourselves fresh on the defensive end and for rebounding purposes. Our players stepped up; you saw it in their eyes. We have seen a lot of losses this year, and I am super proud of this group."
"We were without Tess and Jordyn, so Macy and Michelle were two players that had to step up. UCR put extreme pressure on Anaiyah for 40 minutes so Michelle and Macy had to help handle the ball. Michelle attacked the paint and got critical buckets late in the fourth. We went to Macy late in the game because we knew she would step up and be confident of knocking down the free throws late."
THE STATS
Duchemin paced the Matadors with 12 points, scoring six in the final 10 minutes. Smith posted six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Both tallied four rebounds. Duchemin added four steals. Tu'ua scored six points, dished out a game-high five assists, made three steals, and had three rebounds. Webster recorded a game-high 14 points for UC Riverside. Bryant charted 10.
CSUN held UCR (5-22, 3-14 Big West) to 26.3% shooting (15-of-57) while making 20-of-46 field goal attempts (43.5%). The Matadors outrebounded the Highlanders 35-34.
