CSUN Opens Big West Play This Weekend at UC Davis

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball kicks off the Big West season this weekend when the Matadors visit UC Davis in a three-game series. The teams open the series on Friday at 2 p.m before wrapping up the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Friday's opener will be broadcast on ESPN+.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS

RHP Lucas Braun (1-2, 5.64 ERA) vs. RHP Alejandro Huezo (1-0, 4.50 ERA)
RHP Thomas Bainton (2-0, 3.32 ERA) vs. LHP Bryan Green (3-1, 2.35 ERA)

LAST WEEK'S GAMES
Over the last week, the Matadors were forced to adjust their schedule due to inclement weather. CSUN would play just two games at Pacific last weekend, one of which a five-inning game, while the Matadors moved up their midweek game at Pepperdine from Tuesday to Monday.
CSUN split its two-game series at Pacific, dropping the opener 4-2 before winning game two 2-1 in five innings. Lucas Braun received a no decision in game one, but tossed six quality innings, allowing a run to go with seven strikeouts. Thomas Bainton followed up with a five-inning complete game in the 2-1 win, yielding a run on two hits.
CSUN's offense broke out for eight runs on 10 hits in an 8-3 win at Pepperdine on Monday afternoon. Jakob Simons had two hits and smacked a three-run homer while Ali Camarillo and Mason Le had RBI doubles in the win. Kenji Pallares improved to 3-0 on the year with five innings of work, allowing a run. Ryan Wentz made his first appearance since Feb.19 and worked three shutout innings for the save.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Sophomore catcher Graysen Tarlow enters the week third in the nation in on-base percentage (.617) and fifth in batting average (.500). Both values are tops in The Big West while Tarlow is also seventh in RBI (15) and stolen bases (4) and ninth in hits (16) and slugging percentage (.694). Other Big West leaders include Jakob Simons who is second in the conference in stolen bases (6), fifth in homers (4), sixth in on-base percentage (.491), seventh in runs scored (13) and 10th in RBI (13). On the pitching mound, Kenji Pallares is tied for the conference lead in wins (3) while Lucas Braun is second in strikeouts (31) and Thomas Bainton is eighth in ERA (3.32).Â
As a team, the Matadors open Big West play first in the league in on-base percentage (.410) and fielding percentage (.980) while they are second in batting average (.289) and stolen bases (22). As a pitching staff, CSUN is second in The Big West in opponent batting average (.225) and third in earned run average (3.76).
CSUN is seeking its first series win to open Big West play since 2018 when the Matadors took two of three games from Cal Poly. The Matadors have not opened conference play with a road series win since the 2002 season.
SERIES HISTORY
UC Davis leads CSUN 27-26 in the all-time series. The Matadors though have won the last four series between the two teams including the last two series at UC Davis. CSUN would sweep last season's series with the Aggies at Matador Field.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS
The Aggies dropped to 5-8 on the season after suffering a three-game sweep at Arizona State last weekend. UC Davis has gone 3-3 at home this season with two wins over Utah Valley and one win over Santa Clara. The Aggies were picked to finish ninth in The Big West standings this season by the league's head coaches. Tommy Nicholson is in his second season as head coach of the program.
Nick Leehey tops the team with a .333 batting average followed by Alex Gouveia with a .311 average. Jack Gallagher leads the squad with four homers and 10 RBI. Mark Wolbert, last season's Big West Freshman of the Year, has two homers and nine RBI to go with a .286 batting average. On the pitching side, Bryan Green (3-1) is fifth in The Big West in ERA (2.35) and strikeouts (26).
