Barraza's 11th-Inning Hit Lifts CSUN Past UC Davis in Big West Opener

DAVIS, Calif.---Nathan Barraza broke a 2-2 tie in the 11th inning with a three-run double to help CSUN (10-3, 1-0 Big West) beat UC Davis 6-3 in The Big West opener on Friday at Dobbins Stadium. Lucas Braun received a no decision after working eight quality innings, striking out 10 and allowing two runs.
The Matadors were kept off the scoreboard for nine consecutive innings when they entered the top of the 11th. Kevin Fitzer would open the frame with a single before Ali Camarillo drew a walk. Ben Griffin followed with a bunt back to the pitcher Danny Carrion. On the play, Carrion attempted to force out Fitzer at third base, but his throw was late, leaving the bases loaded and nobody out. Barraza stepped to the plate next and rifled a 1-2 pitch into the gap in right-center field for a bases clearing double.
CSUN would add to its lead on a UC Davis error to take a 6-2 lead to the bottom of the 11th. In the home half of the frame, Isaac Ontiveros struck out two of the first three batters, but would walk the next two Aggies to load the bases. Joshua Romero entered the fray looking for the final out, however, he would throw a four-pitch walk to bring in a run. With the winning run at the plate, Romero forced Alex Gouveia to hit a bouncing grounder to short. Camarillo was able to field the play on the run and make a strong throw to first base, just beating Gouveia for the third out.
Earlier in the game, CSUN scored two runs in the top of the first in support of Braun. The Matadors had runners at the corners with one out in the frame when Fitzer delivered an RBI single. Camarillo would follow with a sacrifice fly to bring home Graysen Tarlow for a CSUN 2-0 lead.
It seemed the two runs would be more than enough for Braun who baffled the Aggie batters throughout the day. The right hander retired the first seven batters to start the game before giving up his first hit in the third. Braun responded by sitting down 11 of the next 12 batters to take a two-run lead to the seventh.
Braun one-hit the Aggies through 6.2 innings but UC Davis came away with a timely two-out hit to even the game. With a runner at first base and two outs, Braun surrendered a two-run homer to Gouveia to left field. The home run would be the only blemish against Braun who retired his final four batters including the last three on swinging strikeouts.
Ontiveros followed up Braun's performance with two hitless frames, only allowing a walk over that span, giving the Matadors an opportunity to break through in the 11th inning.
GAME NOTES
Lucas Braun has now struck out 10 batters in two of his last three starts. Isaac Ontiveros was credited with his second win of the season after working 2.2 innings and allowing one run.
Jakob Simons, who singled and scored on Friday, has reached base safely in all 13 games this season. Graysen Tarlow walked in the game to extend his on-base streak to 12 games while Kevin Fitzer stretched his hitting streak to eight games.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Like I've said before, our pitching and defense can keep us in a variety of ball games. Davis' field plays big and when we utilized the inside game, it worked in our favor.
I was pleased with how Braun and Isaac kept us in it until we could score a few runs. Nathan Barraza also came up clutch after the table was set, but we need to learn how not to get on our heels or feel comfortable with any lead during conference play."
