SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (13-5, 3-2 Big West) scored four runs in the ninth inning to rally past UC Santa Barbara for a 7-4 win on Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Mason Le finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI including a go-ahead RBI hit in the top of the ninth while Xavier Martinez worked 1.2 shutout innings, striking out all five batters he faced to earn the win. The Matador win evened the weekend series and snapped the Gauchos' 11-game winning streak.
The Matadors would enter the top of the ninth trailing 4-3, but would show grit to rally back against the Gauchos. Graysen Tarlow began the rally with a leadoff double before Kevin Fitzer rifled a single to put runners at the corners. Following a pitching change on the mound, Ali Camarillo greeted UCSB pitcher Sam Whiting unkindly with an RBI single to square the game at 4-4. Bren Wilkinson moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt then Whiting fanned Nathan Barraza for the second out.
An intentional walk of Brandon Leon brought Le to the plate with the game on the line. Le fell into an 0-2 hole in the count but responded with a single into center field that plated two runs. Jakob Simons capped off the frame with an RBI single to make it a 7-4 game.
Joshua Romero was called on to get the final three out of the game in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Trimble began the frame with a single, however, Romero sat down the next three batters to secure the save.
Earlier in the game, the Matadors were retired in order in the first and second innings before breaking through in the third. Barraza kicked off the frame with a leadoff double then Leon followed with a bunt single. On the play, an errant throw to first base allowed Barraza to touch home plate. Moments later, Le nearly hit a home run as his drive hit off the center field wall, scoring Leon. The lead then grew to 3-0 on a Shunsuke Sakaino single.
Thomas Bainton kept the Gauchos hitless through the three frames before UCSB pushed across a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from LeTrey McCollum. The Gauchos would be denied of more runs in the frame when Bainton retired Nick Oakley, stranding a runner at third.
Bainton continued to keep the Gauchos off the scoreboard through the middle innings, stranding a runner at second in the fifth and another runner at third in the sixth inning.
However, in the seventh, the Gauchos took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a walk early in the inning to erase the Matador lead. After Ivan Brethowr came through with an RBI single,
Zander Darby and Aaron Parker followed with RBI singles of their own that put UCSB on top 4-3.
Martinez would prevent any further trouble in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Broc Mortensen and Jonah Sebring to end the frame. An inning later, Martinez struck out three more Gauchos in a 1-2-3 frame, setting up the Matador rally in the ninth.
GAME NOTES
Jakob Simons finished 1-for-5 at the plate en route to extending his on-base streak to 18 games. Graysen Tarlow also stretched his on-base streak to 17 games after a 1-for-4 day at the plate.
Thomas Bainton tossed 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts. Joshua Romero notched his fifth save of the season after tossing a shutout ninth inning. Matador pitching recorded 10 combined strikeouts in the game.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Mason had a great offensive day and our team showed resilience in the ninth inning. Thomas Bainton gave us a great start, and I'm glad we got to capitalize on that. Xaver's outing may have been the best we've seen out of him as well.
I liked the attitude we held throughout the game. We were positive, playing free and I hope we can continue that mindset."
