Matadors Fall at UCSB in Series Finale
3/26/2023 3:02:00 PM | Baseball
UCSB leaned on the long ball in the early innings to build a lead. In the bottom of the first, Christian Kirtley hit a solo homer to open up the scoring then Jared Sundstrom belted a two-run home run of his own in the second for a 3-0 lead.
The Gauchos would break open the game in the bottom of the third as 11 batters came to the plate. Zander Darby hit a home run for UCSB to lead off the inning then seven of the next batters reached base with CSUN walking three of those batters. Nick Oakley had a two-run single in the frame while Corey Nunez and Ivan Brethowr had RBI singles to cap off a six-run outburst.
CSUN got a run back in the top of the fourth on a Fitzer RBI single. However, the Gauchos answered with another big inning in the home half of the fourth to stretch the lead to double digits. Sundstrom smacked his second home run, another two-run shot, early in the inning. Nunez added to his RBI tally with a two-out triple while Brethowr made it 13-1 with another RBI single.
The Matadors bats kept on battling despite the large deficit. In the fifth, CSUN collected four-straight two-out hits to produce three runs. Fitzer would rifle a two-run double down the left-field line before Ali Camarillo picked up an RBI double of his own.
UCSB added another single tally in the fifth, but the Matador bullpen kept the Gauchos off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Neil Feist gave the team a lift by retiring 11 of 12 batters, only allowing a two-out triple in the seventh.
CSUN pushed across the final run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth. Camarillo doubled again to start the inning then Brandon Leon and Mason Le collected back-to-back two-out singles to produce the Matadors' fifth run.
GAME NOTES
Graysen Tarlow extended his on-base streak to 18 games after finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Brandon Leon also had a multiple-hit day, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.
Neil Feist worked a season-high 3.2 innings, allowing one hit in his first appearance since Feb. 17. Freshman Aidan Colin made his collegiate debut in the game, recording an out while surrendering an unearned run.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"Neil Feist exemplified the attitude we want to see from our pitching staff. We didn't come in aggressive and ready to attack an opponent today, and we deserved the outcome we got. We need to learn from this if we want to become the team we want to be."
UP NEXT
CSUN returns home for the start of a five-game homestand on Tuesday against San Diego. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
