Matadors Open Homestand with San Diego on Tuesday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (13-6) returns home for the start of a five-game homestand on Tuesday to take on San Diego. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Ghizal Hasan has the call at GoMatadors.com/Radio beginning at 2:50 p.m.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUP
San Diego at CSUN
RHP Aidan Gonzalez (1-0, 7.27 ERA) vs. RHP Neil Feist (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
LAST WEEK'S SERIES
The Matadors dropped two of three games to UC Santa Barbara last weekend at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Gauchos, who were ranked as high as 10th in the national polls last week, won the opener 4-1 before CSUN took game two 7-4. UCSB defeated CSUN 14-5 in the rubber match on Sunday.
The Matadors' game two win would be in come-from-behind fashion. CSUN led 3-0 early in the contest before the Gauchos rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh. The one-run Gaucho lead held up until the top of the ninth when CSUN rallied for four runs. Ali Camarillo would tie up the game with an RBI single before Mason Le broke the tie with a two-out two-run single. Xavier Martinez earned the win after working 1.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out all five batters he faced.
Kevin Fitzer produced five hits and five RBI in the series to go with his first career home run in the opener.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN's midweek matchup with San Diego begins a five-game homestand at Matador Field. This weekend, CSUN hosts UC Riverside in a three-game Big West series starting on Friday before wrapping up the homestand against California Baptist on Monday, Apr. 3. The matchup with CBU was added to the schedule this week in an effort to replace games that were canceled due to weather earlier this season.
Heading into the week, Graysen Tarlow tops The Big West in on-base percentage (.500) while he ranks second in batting average (.387), sixth in stolen bases (9) and 10th in RBI (17). Jakob Simons is first in the conference in stolen bases (9), third in homers (5) and runs scored (20), sixth in slugging percentage (.609) and eighth in on-base percentage (.466). Kevin Fitzer has entered the top-10 in The Big West in batting average, now ranking ninth at a .353 clip.
On the pitching side, Lucas Braun ranks second in The Big West in strikeouts (45) and innings pitched (36.2) while Kenji Pallares is first in wins with four. Joshua Romero remains in first place in saves in the conference with five.
As a team, CSUN is first in The Big West in fielding percentage (.979) and sacrifice hits (15). The Matadors are also third in the league in walks (95) and on-base percentage (.393) while the pitching staff is third in earned run average (4.20).
SERIES HISTORY
The Matadors lead San Diego 35-29-2 in an all-time series dating back to 1964. CSUN has won the last two meetings from USD in the series but the teams have not competed since the 2013 season.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO
The Toreros (9-12-1) dropped two of three games last weekend at Santa Clara. USD has posted a 7-2-1 record at Fowler Park this season while the Toreros are 2-10 on the road. San Diego advanced to the NCAA Regionals last season after winning the WCC Tournament. The team was picked to finish second in the WCC this season by the league's coaches. Brock Ungricht is in his second season at the helm of the program.
Justin DeCriscio tops the team with a .358 batting average to go with a homer and 10 RBI. Angelo Peraza has homered four times and driven in 18 runs to go with a .317 batting average. A pair of All-WCC Preseason honorees, Kevin Sim has eight home runs and 24 RBI while Jack Costello has six homers and 19 RBI. Aidan Gonzalez, who starts Tuesday versus CSUN, sports 12 strikeouts and a 7.27 ERA in 8.2 innings.
