SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Eirik Thomassen blistered the Torrey Pines course for the second straight day, firing a final round 7-under 65 to claim individual medalist honors Tuesday at the UC San Diego Invitational.
Thomassen, who carried a four-shot lead into the final round, followed up rounds of 68-63 on Monday with 7-under 65 on Tuesday to set a CSUN tournament record with a score of 20-under 196. The individual win for Thomassen is CSUN's second this season after Felix Schrott won the Bill Cullum Invitaitonal in October. His 20-under total is a CSUN tournament record and the Matadors' best total since Schrott finished at 14-under 199 (68-65-66) at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate in 2021.
As a team, the Matadors finished third in the 15-team, their best finish since also winning the Cullum Invitational. After posting rounds of 282-277 on Monday, CSUN closed with a round of 280 to finish at 25-under 839, its low 54-hole total of the season. The Matadors finished seven shots behind team champion Oklahoma Christian (832) and were five shots back of Seattle which finished second at 834.

COACH JIM BRACKEN SAID
"Eirik was phenomenal, he had one bogey in 54 holes which is amazing. He really did everything well in this tournament, every part of his game was clicking. If one shot failed him, his next shot was outstanding and got him back on track. The entire team played well and we feel like it's coming around. We've got a big stretch here coming up as we get ready for the Big West Championship."
The Matadors will begin the homestretch of the 2023 season next week as CSUN travels to University Place, Wash. for the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay (Apr. 3-4).Â
