Kelpis Third; Chidester Eighth at UCSB Heptathlon

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— Brianna Kelpis finished third, while Elizabeth Chidester placed eighth at the UC Santa Barbara Sam Adams Combined Events on Thursday.
Kelpis, a junior, scored 4,413 points to earn a career-best finish. On day one, she finished second in the 100m hurdles (14:77), fifth in the high jump (4-11 1/2), first in the shot put (42-8), and seventh in the 200m in a personal-best outdoor time of :27.79.
Thursday began with Kelpis coming in seventh in the long jump (15-6). Kelpis was fourth in the javelin (101-8). She concluded the meet with an outdoor personal-best time in the 800m of 2:41.68 (eighth overall).
Day one saw Chidester run :18.01 in the 100m hurdles to come in 10th. She was eighth in the high jump (4-7 3/4), fourth in the shot put (36-1 1/4), and fifth in the 200m (:27.15). Thursday began with an eighth-place finish in the long jump (14-6). She tossed the javelin 101-4 for sixth and wrapped up the meet by running 2:30.93 in the 800m (fifth).
Audrie Reuss scored 2,640 points on day one and was in fifth but withdrew on day two. UCSB's Jessica Swalve took home top honors as she scored 5,130 points.

"I was happy with how the women performed over the last two days. All three had different goals in the meet, and we were able to accomplish several of those goals throughout the competition."
"We fell short in a few areas, but I know these women, and I'm confident we can make the necessary improvements before our next heptathlon. People underestimate the complex nature of the heptathlon, and I love how these women prepare daily in practice and their ability to stay focused and relaxed throughout the competition."

The Matadors formally open the outdoor season on Saturday when the squad enters the UCSB Invite. The field events start at 10:30 a.m., with the running events beginning at 12:30 p.m.
