UC Davis Edges CSUN in a Pair of Games

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---UC Davis and CSUN battled in a pair of Big West softball games Friday afternoon, but the Aggies came away with a doubleheader sweep at Matador Diamond. Â

ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
UC Davis defeated CSUN 3-0 to begin the day.Â

Rylie Costa led off the UC Davis third with a double to the left center gap. Sommer Kisling's slap attempt was successful as she reached on an infield single. Anna Dethlefson's opposite field single to short right field scored pinch-runner Gia Felice to break the seal. Leah Polson reached on a fielder's choice. resulting in a CSUN error to load the bases. CSUN starter Lauryn Carranco struck out Libbie McMahon, the Aggies No. 3 hitter.Â

Bella Pahulu's grounder went off Carranco's glove to Matadors' shortstop Vinessa Nunez who threw home to Kylie Galindo for the second out. Grace Kilday flew out to center to end the inning. Â

UC Davis starter Kenedi Brown began the game with four consecutive strikeouts. She struck out five of the first six she faced before walking Alexis Garcia to begin the bottom of the third. Nunez successfully sacrificed pinch runner Samantha Kwiatkowski to second. Carys Murakami flew out to center before Shaylan Whatman walked. Kennedy Gustin grounded out to third to end the inning.Â

Sarah Starks singled with one out in the top of the fourth. Costa's sac bunt advanced Starks to second. Costa went to third on a Carranco wild pitch. Kisling grounded out to third for the final out. Â

Alexa Landeros worked out a four-pitch walk against Brown with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Kaylee Escutia s grounder was second was fielded by McMahan, her throw to second was originally ruled out, but was overturned by replay, giving runners at first and second. Galindo struck out. Sara Nakahara made a diving catch of a Garcia liner in left field for the final out. Â

Dethlefson singled to right center to begin the top of the fifth before stealing her league high 28th base. Polson struck out attempting to bunt with two strikes. Pinch-hitter Delaney Diaz popped out to second. Pahulu doubled to left center to drive in Dethlefson. Kilday followed with a single up the middle to score Pahulu. Nakahara popped out to second for the third out. Â

Nunez's opposite field single to right to begin the bottom of the fifth was CSUN's first hit. Brown quickly retired the next three CSUN batters to keep the score 3-0. Â

Brown limited the Matadors to just one hit. She struck out 11 and walked three. Dethlefson charted two of the seven Aggies' hits. Carranco took her first loss in Big West play. She went the distance, striking out five and walking two. Â

GAME 2Â
UC Davis defeated CSUN 3-1 in the nightcap. Â

Dethlefson walked to lead off the top of the first. She stole second and moved to third on a Kisling sac bunt. Dethlefson scored when McMahan grounded out to short.Â
Â
Costa's one-out double in the top of the second drove in Nakahara. The Davis put runners on second and third later in the inning. Allie Gardiner relieved Isabella Alonso. She pitched the Matadors out of the inning with two consecutive outs to leave the score 2-0. Â

Escutia's opposite-field double to right center led off the CSUN second. Jordan Kaeka's sac bunt advanced Escutia to third before she scored on Garcia's opposite-field single to left. Â

Nunez walked to lead off the CSUN fifth. Bella Mejia put down a successful sacrifice bunt to push Nunez to second. A Caroline Grimes pitch hit Whatman to bring up Mikayla Carman who flew out to center. Landeros ground out to Grimes to conclude the frame.Â

Nakahara singled to begin the sixth and stole second. Starks' liner to center was deep enough to advance Nakahara to third. Costa's sacrifice fly scored Nakahara to increase the lead to 3-1. Â

The Matadors brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. A one-out Nunez single to left was followed by Mejia grounding into a 5-4 fielder's choice. Whatman flew out to right to end the game.

Grimes improved to 4-0 on the year as she allowed two hits in relief of the starter, Taylor Fitzgerald. Dethlefson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. She is 30-for-31 in stolen base attempts this season. Escutia was 2-for-3, with Nunez posting a 2-for-2 performance with a walk.

The road team has now won nine in a row in the all-time series dating back to the 2019 season. Â
