Matadors Make Midweek Trip to USC on Tuesday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (21-9, 8-4 Big West) opens the week with a midweek matchup at USC on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed via Pac 12 Insider.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUP

LAST WEEK'S SERIES
The Matadors came away with their first road series win at Long Beach State since the 2001 season this past weekend. CSUN claimed the first two games of the series, 12-6 and 3-2, before dropping the finale by a 6-4 score.
In the opener, CSUN erased an early 2-0 deficit by scoring 11 times over the third, fourth and fifth innings. Ali Camarillo would give the Matadors the lead for good with a two-run single in the third while Jakob Simons capped off a five-run fifth with a grand slam.
The Matadors took game two of the series thanks in large part to Thomas Bainton's 6.2 shutout innings of work. Bainton no-hit the Dirtbags through 5.2 innings and would eventually give up just two hits to go with seven strikeouts. CSUN scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning, capped by a two-run double from Simons.
MATADOR HEADLINES
After a big week at the plate, outfielder Jakob Simons earned his first career Big West Field Player of the Week nod on Monday. Simons slashed .417/.462/.833 in the three games against Long Beach State to go with seven RBI, three runs scored and his grand slam. He is the second Matador to earn a Field Player of the Week nod this season, joining Graysen Tarlow, who took home the first honor of the season back on Feb. 20.
The Matadors' offense remains one of the best nationally and in The Big West. CSUN hitters are batting a combined .316 at the plate, which ranks 18th-highest in the nation while the Matadors are 23rd in sacrifice hits (24) and 49th in runs per game (8.0). In The Big West, the Matadors pace the field in batting average, on-base percentage (.406), slugging percentage (.480), stolen bases (48) and sacrifice hits. CSUN is also second in the conference in runs (239), hits (327) and RBI (221) and third in home runs (29).
CSUN currently places five in The Big West's top-10 list in batting average with Simons in second place at a .378 batting average. Tarlow is fourth in the conference in batting (.367) followed by Ali Camarillo in seventh (.356) and Kevin Fitzer and Shunsuke Sakaino in ninth (.340). Sakaino also tops the league in on-base percentage (.382) while Simons is first in stolen bases (10) and second in home runs (10), slugging percentage (.739) and RBI (36).
On the pitching side, Thomas Bainton has moved into first place in The Big West in wins (5) while Lucas Braun is in second place in innings pitched (55.1) and strikeouts (64). Joshua Romero is tied for first place in saves with six this season.
SERIES HISTORY
USC leads CSUN 56-25-1 in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1962 season. The teams have played five times since 2018 with the Trojans winning the last three meetings. USC swept the season series in 2022, winning 16-10 at Matador Field and 6-0 at Dedeaux Field.
Left-handed pitcher Isaac Ontiveros earns the start against USC on Tuesday. Ontiveros has made 10 appearances, nine of which out of the bullpen and sports a 4.02 ERA and a 2-0 record. The southpaw has struck out 16 batters over 15.2 innings.

After winning 12 of 14 games, USC was swept this past weekend at Arizona State. USC has been especially tough at home this season, sporting a 16-4 record with two of those losses coming to Big West teams (UC Irvine and UC Riverside). Prior to the season, USC was picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12 by the league's head coaches. Andy Stankiewicz is in his first season as head coach of the program.
Austin Overn tops the Trojans in batting with a .342 average to go with 38 runs scored, 24 RBI, 11 stolen bases, 10 triples and three homers. Cole Gabrielson sports a team-high eight home runs and 39 RBI with a .312 average at the plate. As a team, USC is ranked 26th in the nation in earned run average at a 4.12 clip. Former Matador Blake Sodersten has a 4.06 ERA in 13 appearances this season for USC. Michael Ebner will make his second appearance this season on the mound versus CSUN as he comes in with one inning of work in 2023.
